FMA: Brotherhood Ep. 1

Fullmetal Alchemist - 鋼の錬金術師 (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi)

Edward and Alphonse are back, with all the usual short jokes included. Edward is working under Colonel Roy Mustang as a state alchemist, and in this episode they are all chasing after a water alchemist named Isaac MacDougall (aka Icy Isaac) in Central City. Isaac had worked with the Colonel during the Ishbal Massacre, but in the process he became extremely aggravated with the current government, and began plans to destroy Central. Isaac has the power to both freeze and evaporate water, which he uses to not only kill several soldiers, but also, through a number of transmutation circles around the city, turn the cities water supply into giant icebergs rampaging through the town toward Headquarters.

The episode starts off with Central looking for the Ice Alchemist Isaac McDougall, a rouge state alchemist who fought in the war with Mustang, Kimblee, Armstrong, Hughes and the rest back in the day. Now Isaac's plan is to take down the Fuhrer and he plans to do so by freezing central headquarters, thus, as he puts it "sending the Fuhrer to hell." Next we see Fuhrer King Bradley talking to Mustang and ordering him to go after Isaac as well as to keep an eye on Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist and his brother Alphonse Elric, who is mistaken in this episode a lot as Fullmetal. So the hunt is on for Isaac and at one point he actually does get captured but soon escapes again thanks to his alchemic talents which allow him to manipulate water in anyway he chooses such as ice or steam (he uses alchemy to turn the water into steam in order to escape). His primary objective involves him making transmutation circles around central and once all completed, he can amplify his alchemy allowing him to create a massive ice barrier around central. In one scene, we see that Isaac is talking with Kimblee, the Crimson Alchemist, asking for his help in taking down the Fuhrer. He recalls how fun it was for Kimblee to kill back when they fought in the war but to no avail does Isaac succeed in convincing Kimblee to help him and he leaves in an attempt to continuing doing this his way. So nearing the end of the episode, we see that Isaac has successfully made all the transmutation circles around Central and a red glow around a small scene of "Father," the main antagonist in the manga. Even Roy Mustang and Major Armstrong end up helping out by getting rid of the transmutation circles. Isaac, who has suffered a beating from Ed and Al, runs into the Fuhrer himself who cuts him down all too easily. The ending begins by Mustang being thanked by the Fuhrer because even though the Fuhrer killed Isaac, he felt the need to reward Mustang with the generous thanks he didn't necessarily deserve. Ed and Al are contemplating if Isaac's Alchemy had anything to do with the philosophers stone and conclude that they need more research. At the very end of the episode, we get to see Lust speaking on the phone with some stranger while Gluttony is pigging out as usually on something resembling a human corpse. Lust and Gluttony have big plans for Lior and thus the episode ends.
