Marineford Arc Review Rating:
The war with the Whitebeard Pirates
has shown to be the prefect ground to finally expose the Marines
latest weapon to the world, the Pacifista Army
of Bartholomew Kuma
's strategy seems to be falling into place, and one of the Whitebeard Pirates comes to his father with a message to deliver at the tip of his sword.
It's hard to really say what my thoughts are on this episode. It was certainly eventful to put it lightly. Still, not a lot was going on in this one. Most of this seems to be about leading up to events. We open with the appearance of the Pacifistas, and most of the events following was about everyone reacting to them. Mindful, it would be a huge shock to see all those copies of Bartholomew Kuma. It just doesn't make for the most thrilling television. It does have to be recognized that Oda
has a unique skill in his writing. Seemingly random events actually show to effect plot later down the line, such as Buggy looking for a transponder snail last episode.
A side effect of this episode seems to be so they could showcase some of their lesser known commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates. As Luffy
is in danger from Kizaru
. The lot of them come to the rescue of the Straw Hat Pirate
captain. It's quite the humbling experience. For the run of the series we have been used to Luffy running into battle and beating people left and right. Now, he's facing serious threats that the Whitebeard Pirates are handling with relative ease. It's just annoying that this is the extent of what Luffy does.
I enjoyed seeing Tashigi
again. We only see her briefly, but she's kicking some butt.
Not sure I would call this the best part of the episode, but I would call it a surprise. One of Whitebeard
's very own, Squard
, has turned against him, and the reasons are unknown. I have a strong suspicion that Akainu
is behind this one.
Story wise, the episode is slim. There are a lot of shots of wild explosions all over the place and discussion of the strategy. One of the biggest plus was that there were no more Boa Hancock
delusions of her marrying Luffy. Still, there is this awkward moment where she looks right to the audience and says how she's worried about Luffy.
One again Buggy
and his fanboy crew take the spotlight for longer than needed, but it actually involves the story this time. The best part about this scene was how annoyed Sengoku is about this. Seems Buggy's glory hogging moment is preventing him from following through with some part of his plan.
it's odd to say, but while so much seems to be going on. Not a great deal really happens in this episode until the very end. So much of the episode was dedicated to so many people reacting to these Kuma clones. There are some laughs to have in this episode and you will see some cool fighting. It all just seems to be setting the stage for the shock ending.
Mostly, I would say the episode feels closer to the 3.5 out of 5, but that shock finale I think raises up just high enough for a 4 out of 5, barely. It's not a bad episode, and I'm certainly looking forward to the next one. Favorite Moment: Whitebeards to Luffy's rescue
Least Favorite Moment: The Buggy show retakes
WTF Moment: Family Fued
Favorite Character This Episode: Marco
