You know a first impression is one the most important things to any form of entertainment. Fistful of Dollars starts with The Man With No Name walking into town and seeing a boy being attacked by a gang, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens with an old man receiving a flower as a present. Every episode of Midsomer Murders opens with either a fair or someone dying. Gosick opens to The Hound of the Baskervilles killing the Rabbits from Wartership Down while Little Red Riding Hood preaches like a madwoman. Cool right? NO! It just feels like it was put there because "starting a show with a girl yawning would be bad".
"Oh hai girl living at the top of creepy tower."
But before I begin my rant on why "The Dark Reaper Finds the Golden Fairy" is a bad first episode let me sum up the important stuff that happens. The Dark Reaper (Kazuya Kujo) Finds the Golden Fairy (Victorica) at the top of a Library, tower, lighthouse, garden, thing and finds out that she is smart and helps an Detective solve crimes (think Sherlock Holmes but without the cocaine taking).
Firstly the setting is (regardless of time period) just Japanese Europe (which if it isn't a concept or location really needs to be), it might be set in real 1920's Europe, but it is still just a generic Japanese-European country and because of that we ultimately have no reason to care about the place. If it is just a backdrop then why not just set the bloody thing in France? You're already using French writing on the map that you showed us, and if there is French writing on the map does that mean that everyone is actually speaking in French?
Secondly, set something up for Pete's sake!
I'm just going to list a few of the questions I had while watching the first half of the show.
Why would you even do that?
- What is so good about this school?
- Why is this kid called The Dark Reaper?
- Why is this teacher so concerned with him making friends THE MOMENT SHE SEES HIM?
- Why Ghost stories?
- Why is there a giant fucking tower? (granted it could be story related)
- Why is there a girl living in the tower? (same here)
- Why does he automatically think she is a doll?
- Why is what looks to be a 14 year-old smoking a pipe?
- Why is she smoking a Pipe that looks like it is made out of a piece of China?
This leads me to my third point. Why is everyone else incompetent?
"Oh Hai Wakka's gay Sailor brother."
You see the thing most people don't understand about Sherlock Holmes is that he is only regarded as one of the smartest men around because he makes the people around him look normal. But these people aren't incompetent, they are some of the smartest people around. In The Hound of the Baskervilles the story follows Dr Watson and it isn't just him going around saying "cor blimey I'm buggered" you feel like he could with some time work at least most of the mystery out. In Gosick everyone that isn’t Victoria is a complete moron. Are you really going to tell me that THE BEST INSPECTOR IN THE POLICE FORCE couldn’t see that a bullet went through the lock and killed a woman. It might be a bit improbable BUT HE DIDN’T EVEN THINK OF IT! Also are you really telling me that the police force didn’t think to at least give a glancing look to the rooms around the crime scene? I mean then they would notice that there was a bullet in the next room as-well. What only makes this worse is the Inspector and Reaper are amazed when Victoria tells them this. It isn’t a good way to show that Victoria is smarter or that she notices the finer details, it just makes it seem like she is the only person who isn’t an absolute fuck-wit.
This is one of the worst opening episodes for a show that I have ever seen, it is almost inconceivable how terrible it is. Even Rio - The Rainbow Gate with its ludicrous plot at least made a good first episode by giving us small answers to our questions like, Who is she? and Why are they here?, but it still gave us threads for the overall story. Gosick feels so far like all thread and no hook.
