Haru is an average girl that happened to save a cat from danger. Strangely enough, the cat thanks her and informs her that her actions will be recognized. She receives an abundance of gifts and her life certainly changes - but for the worse!
Ordinary schoolgirl Haru saves a cat from being run over by a truck; it was a strange cat, carrying a present, but even so she's very surprised to find it was the Prince of Cats. Haru is soon showered with feline gifts, including cattails in the yard, pockets full of catnip, and even live mice. However, the prince's kingly father determines that the only way to truly reward her is for her to marry the cat prince. She looks for help, and finds it in the suave shape of Baron, owner of the Cat Business Office, who saves her from marriage but steals a bit of her heart in the process-compare to similar romantic attachment in Howl's Moving Castle and, most obviously, Catnapped, which also features a visitor who must escape from a feline dimension before being trapped there forever. This is a nicely crafted movie that would be a major achievement for many other studios, but it only ranks as a minor Ghibli work, substituting whimsy for the overwhelming power of the studio's best output. There's a slight story link to Whisper of the Heart, but no need to see it first to enjoy this-supposedly this story is one of those written by Shizuku, the protagonist of the other movie. Both are based on manga by Aoi Hiiragi, this one originating in Baron-Neko no Danshaku (Baron-Baron of Cats). Released in Japanese theaters with episide two of Ghiblies.
