Ambiguous Gender

A common theme in anime and manga is for a character to be a man that looks feminine or a woman that looks masculine, often leading the viewers to believe them to be of the opposite gender.

Antagonist

The main opposing force of a story. Normally the antagonist is a villain but other forms of fiction may have them as heroes or indifferent characters.

Bad Ass Fight Scene

A fight scene or epic battle that stands above the norm of what the series offers and goes down in history as one of the best combat encounters in the series. The perfect combination of epicness and animation.

Betrayal

Betrayal is the act of treachery or a violation of a trust or allegiance. This can be to one's friends, country, or God.

Big Bad

Usually the main villain of the season/show. Alongside the "Bigger Bads", they are the most difficult to defeat or even kill.

Bullies and Bullying

A bully is a person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.

Childhood Friend

The character has known the protagonist for a long time, typically all his/her life. If he/she's from the opposite gender there's a high chance he/she has a crush on the main character.

Childhood Promise

When I was 5 years old, I promised the neighbor's girl I'd marry her and become King of Japan. 10 years later, she wonders why I haven't done both of those things yet.

Clothing Damage

When a character's clothes become torn from an attack, such as an explosion or energy blast.

Coward

Often used as a form of comic relief in anime, cowards run away to fight another day. This doesn't mean they won't stand up for what's right, they'll just do it with trembling knees.

Crazy Driver

Anime characters whose reckless driving makes them a feared presence both to other drivers on the road and the passengers who are along for the ride. Quite often used for gags in comedy anime and manga titles.

Damsel In Distress

A maiden is in peril and only her one true hero can save her.

Going on a date with...

Determinator

A character who refuses to give up no matter what their odds are. They may be bruised, burned, mangled, crippled, or nearly dead but they will never quit. These roles are usually fulfilled by heroes.

Fighters

The character knows well how to defend him or herself.

Good Turned Bad

Also known as corruption, this is when someone previously goodhearted becomes sinister.

Humans

Humans are typically depicted as the dominant species of the planet Earth, and sometimes of other planets. Humans often mirror their real life counterparts in terms of abilities and intellect, while other times they can achieve superhuman feats.

Ki

Ki is considered to be life force or life energy. Often in Japanese anime and manga, exceptional martial artists are able to harness the Ki for various superhuman feats. It is also referred to as Chi or Qi in Chinese.

Manhwa

Korean comics are often referred to as "manhwa."

Martial Arts

Seen in just about every form of anime at least at one point. The key component that makes Shounen popular among boys. As well as Ancient art in itself

Mother

A woman who has given birth to or raised a child.

Murder

The act of taking another person's life.

Power-Up

Power-Up is a concept that usually comes after training.

Protagonist

The main character of a story or plot. Most forms of fiction have the protagonist as a hero but there are rare occasions with an evil or not-so-noble protagonist.

Smoker

A person who smokes tobacco.

Strong Women

Anime has long been known for having many strong male protagonist and depicting women as being weaker and in need of protection, but there are many female characters out there fighting this stereotype. These are women who possess strength not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well and are often the heroes of a series.

Students

A Student is one who is enrolled or attends classes at a school, college, or university. A popular theme among many manga and animes.

Teachers

A Teacher is a type of person who is in charge of educating others in some form of higher learning or skill. The Japanese title is "Sensei".

Training

Specialized strategies and methods of exercise used in various anime and manga series to develop characters and prepare them for performing in events.

Unrequited love

A passion or romance for a person where these feelings are not returned by the object of affection. A one-sided love.
