The Gurren Lagann manga that I'm the most excited about right now is not the one currently being held in my hands. I really, really want Bandai to pick up the license to Gurren Gakuen Hen , or "Gurren High School Version," in which all of the characters from the famed anime appear as high school characters together. Kind of like the Shinji Ikari Raising Project, but probably sillier.

But we don't have that one yet, so in the meantime, let's make do with the manga adaptation of the anime, by Kotaru Mori.

All in all I thought I get the sense that it's true to the tone, and that they MAY make some interesting changes later. So far, though, it's faithful to the anime, to the degree that those who've watched the anime might not want to bother. It could be an easily-accessible entrance into the franchise for a newbie, though, if any of you haven't picked it up yet. Still, the anime is definitely superior.

How about you guys? Any of you checked this out yet, or planning to? Why or why not?

The manga is ok, but I think that giant robo is difficult to do in manga. And yes, the Gurren Gakuen Hen is awesome! (Japanese bookstores rule)

Well....this is one series that I think can't really be converted well to manga. I've read it, I think they made an excellent and heartfelt attempt, but this is just one series that just doesn't convert well to manga. Part of it is the fact that it's super robot, which that alone is extremely hard to do in manga form, but to make matters worse, it's really difficult to maintain the whole "over the top" feel that the show conveys, especially with characters' attitudes like Kamina.

Overall a very good job, but in no way could you compare it to any multimedia version.

For some reason though I think a Gurren Lagann audio drama could probably work rather well... too bad we never get stuff like that over here.

I feel like the art holds but as anyone would agree...

Gurren Lagann is Gurren Lagann

No sort of downsized adaption would ever be the same.

I pretty much agree with HeeroYuy's post. I got the manga since it came with the last LE package dealie and while it looks nicely drawn, the epicness that is from the anime isn't shown nicely in manga format. We don't get the rumbunction speeches from Kamina or the timidness from Simon by their respective voice talents in the anime so the manga felt shortlived.

If the Gakuen Hen manga was released here, I would buy it in an instant since it's an entirely different thing compared to the manga. I don't think I'll continue buying the rest of the original storyline again since I already have the dvds...

I will say however that after watching it on Sci Fi tonight and finding out that they had cast Mela Lee as Darry, I'm really tempted to go out and buy the dubbed DVDs....even if they aren't HD.

@HeeroYuy: I watched today's episode too. The sequence with Kamina still brings an almost tear to my eye.

I guess I'm the only one who wants to buy both mangas. That's kinda how I am.
