History/BackgroundTamaki, nicknamed "Tama-chan," is the daughter of a Kendo master who runs a family dojo. From a young age, she learned to practice Kendo from both her mother and father. Her mother died when she was young. Over the years, Tamaki has become an expert Kendo player and can take on opponents much larger and older than her. Tamaki views Kendo as a chore done at home rather than a sport or hobby. She is discovered by Kendo coach, Ishida-sensei, when she saves him and fellow student Kirino Chiba from being hit by a baseball, tennis ball, football and vice principal. She knocks them all out of the way using a broom she was sweeping with. She initially refuses to join the kendo club. One day after school, she attends a Kendo Club practice; she sees a couple of the new members being bullied by an upper class member. Due to her firm belief in justice, she challenges the bully to a match and defeats him. Afterward, she decides to join the club.
