Jiraiya’s journey to seek out a student is postponed due to the outbreak of the Third Great Ninja War. Jiraiya joins Tsunade and Orochimaru to battle the Village Hidden in the Rain. Following the battle, the three ninja are named the “Legendary Sannin,” a title given to them by the enemy Hanzo of the Great Salamander himself.

Points of Interest
- This episode marks the first time Jiriaya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru were dubbed the Three Sannin by Hanzo.
- While Jiraiya is writing "Tales of the Gutsy Ninja" he was heating ramen and inside the bowl can be seen a piece of Narutomaki, a kind of fish-paste and Naruto's namesake.
- Rin, from Kakashi's past, makes only a very brief appearance and has no dialog.
- Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato have two voice actors in this episode. Ones for their child versions and another for their teens.
- This episode is the first introduction of Naruto's mother, Kushina; and explains how Naruto got his name.
