Grandiose stage musicals in which both male and female roles are played by women. Occasionally these are based on popular franchises, such as Phoenix Wright and the Rose of Versailles.
The Takarazuka Revue was founded in 1913 by the President of Hankyu Railways in the city of Takarazuka. It was created to attract more tourists to the area.
In Takarazuka, ladies who play men are called otokoyaku, and the ones that play female roles musumeyaku. They have several troupes: Hana, Tsuki (the original ones), Yuki, Hoshi, Sora and Senka (aka Superior Members).
A well-known Takarazuka actress is Mayo Suzukaze, who played as VA for Kenshin Himura in Rurouni Kenshin.
The Takarazuka Revue has performed operas, film and book adaptations, classic Japanese stories like Genji Monogatari, and also manga adaptations, like Versailles no Bara and Black Jack.
