A Japanese animator and co-founder of studio Gainax.
Takami Akai is a Japanese animator and one of the original founders of the studio Gainax.
Akai has worked on many of Gainax's most popular works, including Banner of the Stars and Crest of the Stars, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, and the Princess Maker games.
Akai was also a producer on Gainax's recent hit Gurren Lagann. However, when the fourth episode-- which offered a different look to the series --came out, fans began commenting wildly on the production blog for the series. A fan uncovered comments by Akai on the popular Japanese social networking site Mixi, in which he made disparaging comments about users of the popular message board 2ch, who were among the more vocal of commenters.
After the incident Akai stepped down from his position on the Gainax board and also as producer on Gurren Lagann in apology, but he continues to work with Gainax. According to Akai, Yamaga, and the other Gainax employees who attended Fanime Con in 2008, Akai's "leaving" Gainax is something of a regular joke, as it has apparently happened or nearly happened more than once.
