Szayel Aporro Grantz

Origin

Szayel Apporo Grantz was the 8th Espada under Sousuke Aizen, but before that he worked under Aizen to an unknown, lesser capacity. He also assisted Nnoitra Jiruga, the former 8th Espada, in incapacitating Nelliel tu Oderschvank and reducing her to child form.

Creation

Szayel Apporo Grantz was created by the mangaka Tite Kubo for the Bleach series. In his anime adaptation, his various transformations were toned down from their graphic depiction in the manga, In the Japanese track, he is voiced by Kousuke Toriumi, and in the English dub he is voice by Hank Matthews.

Major Story Arcs

Szayel was first introduced alongside the other Espada, during Aizen's Grand Meeting, where he talks about his interest in meeting these intruders into Hueco Mundo.

Later, Szayel engaged in battle with Dondochakka Blisen and Renji Abarai, when he reveals his position as the top researcher in Hueco Mundo, similar to Mayuri Kurotsuchi's OWN position as Scientific Researcher in Soul Society. Renji attempts to activate his Bankai, but Szayel reveals that the room they are in was built to nullify Bankai. Then, Szayel's Fraccion come in, claiming that Rukia and Aaronerio killed each other, causing Renji to fly into a rage.

Uryu Ishida then appears and attempts to assist Renji with the battle. Although Ishida thinks that he has killed Szayel with a Steele Schneider to the throat, Szayel laughs and says that he analyzed Ishida's battle with Cirucci Thunderwitch, and learned how to take the proper precautions. The four continue to duke it out, and just as they think Szayel is out for the count he reappears, devouring one of his Fraccion to regain his strength.

Szayel's final appearance was during his battle with Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Each combatant, alike in both intelligence and lack of ethics, had to find ways to outplan outhink their opponent. In the end, even though Szayel had revealed the many abilities of his Resurrecion Fornicaras, and even though he HAD defied the odds on several occasions, Kurotsuchi revealed that he had placed several dangerous drugs within Nemu's body as a precaution, and Szayel was left to feel life at an incredibly slowed pace. Then, Mayuri stabbed him, but to Szayel it felt like a million years.

Powers and Abilities

Sonido:

Like most Arrancar, Szayel is able to utilize Sonido, the Hollow form of Shunpo, which allows him to move at high speeds and, in a way, teleport from location to location.

Hierro:

Szayel also has a protective layer, or Hierro, which is concentrated spiritual pressure, and can deflect powerful blows.

Zanpakuto

Szayel wields a zanpakuto by the name of Fornicaras ( フォルニカラス) , with the Release Command being "Sip
(啜れ, Susure) , Fornicaras", then swallowing his sword. He then takes on the appearance of a cross between a butterfly and a sea anemone. In this form, he is able to make copies of his enemies, create "voodoo dolls" of his enemies and give him control over their actions and body parts, possess the nervous system of whatever he is swallowed by to make them do his bidding, and resurrect himself (after a fashion) with an ability called Gabriel (
ガブリエール).

Consumable Fraccion

Szayel has made it so that his Fraccion can be ingested by him, and used as a form of regenerative medicine.

Rokureichu (録霊蟲, Spirit-Recording Bugs)

Szayel created a variety of creature, comparable to a mushi, that would inhabit the body of his host and record information for Szayel to analyze and learn from.

Power Control Device

Although never named, the device was utilized to deactivate both Renji's Bankai and Ishida's Quincy Abilities.

Controlled Corridors

Szayel manipulated the corridors in his domain so that they are controlled by him, and any attempt to find an exit or discover anything would lead any intruders back to their point of origin.

Other Media

Anime

Szayel's characterization weren't changed for the anime. However, some details about his fight scenes and abilities were altered.

First, Ishida's Steele Schneider was made to pierce his stomach, rather than his neck.

Second, in the manga he literally eats his Fraccion to regain his strength. However, the anime opted to make the Fraccion turn into glowing light that he consumed instead.

Third, his Ressureccion's ability, Gabriel, was changed so that instead of emerging headfirst from Nemu's mouth, she instead emits a glowing light which turns into Szayel.

Otherwise, the character stayed relatively intact in his transition to the anime.

Movies

Although not playing a main part, Szayel has a tie in with the 4th movie, Hell Chapter.

Szayel makes an appearance in several of the video games, often with differing move sets.

Szayel has his own character album as part of the Bleach Beat Collection: 3rd Season. He sings two songs for it, Pink and SCIENCE SHOW.
