Welcome to the Sword Art Online anime discussion thread!

For those who are new to Sword Art Online, here's a synopsis written by my teammates:

Technological innovation named Nerve Gear allows players to enter virtual world, achieving the true immersion. Soon after the invention of Nerve Gear, beta invitations of MMO named Sword Art Online are sent to numerous players. The game was fun to play until player realized that they cannot log out of the game. Suddenly creator of Sword Art Online appears and announces that everybody in the game are trapped within, until they defeat boss at top of dungeon.

Trailers

It's an action, fantasy, and cyberpunk anime, and what I heard from fans, it's reminiscent of .hack. Though, I haven't try that anime series. We could discuss that topic in a special blog later.

Watch it legally at Crunchyroll.

All comments are welcome.

If you're free on time, my teammates and I welcome any help on the wiki pages for Sword Art Online. Just don't plagiarize. Thank you.

hopefully it will have better pacing than .hack. I liked the .hack overall but the pacing on it killed the fun for me. i fell asleep on couple episodes.

I hear light novel readers are disappointed on how they handled episode 2

@buhssuht:

I better go try .hack.

@Wraith:

I was reading the Light Novel differences over at Sword Art Online Wikia. Lots of stuff were omitted including Asuna's scenes which may be the reason.

I found this to be hilarious from the first episode. Must suck to be reverted to your real world appearance while stuck wearing your female avatar clothing. Note the male to female ratio in the before and after

@buhssuht: @Wraith:

Spoilers for the Light Novel

There's a graphic sex scene in volume 1 when I happened to skim one of the chapters [in the Sword Art Online Wikia]. I never thought this franchise has this stuff. See Ch. 16.5 of volume 1 if you are curious, my friends.

Makes me wonder how would they censor it for the anime. It got me psyched that my old concept page Implied Sex Scene is going to be applied to the franchise.

Edit:

I wonder if they actually lost their virginity in an online virtual game.

@takashichea: for that matter, how do they take care of bathroom problem?

Ooh, I didn't know they have one. I remember my favorite series, Sket Dance, censored their bathroom scene with an eyecatch. Though, Sword Art Online doesn't have one. I'm thinking they can censor it with those Japanese garden bamboo water works or something else water related innuendos.

@takashichea: I wasn't referring to the scene. I was referring about how players are trapped in the game, and yet how are they supposed to take care of 'bathroom' problem?

@buhssuht:

Oh yeah, my bad. I have the same questions and how they are going to eat and drink water to stay alive.

Here's a quote from the chapter. I hope you guys enjoy it.

@Sonata:

I didn't read the chapter, but I heard from a fan about the sex scene between Asuna and Kirito in the Light Novel.

@AgentFakku:

Dude, Too Much Information! Now, I can't forget the quote.

Edit:

I censored the last bit since I don't want to spoil a fan who is watching the anime but hasn't read the light novel. Yet, the picture that Agent Fakku posted already revealed stuff.

@takashichea: It makes me curious as well how the anime will handle that when it gets to that point.

Sachi
Sachi

Episode 3 is a bit sad. It still shows how lives of the players are so fragile. Kirito is moody and blames himself for the death of a guild and Sachi. I wish he joins Klein's guild. I didn't like the episode since it skips around.

@takashichea:

Don't blame me, dude. You brought up the sex stuff first.

Just watched ep3. Hah, so you can hide your player level. That would be interesting in an actual game, making it closer to REAL LIFE. o.O"

Getting wiped by a trap mob... true story. Also not sure if crunchyroll made a typo spelling "Reindeer" in the episode title. Unless it's some sort of pun on snow being like frozen rain.

It was an okay episode, but so far the only thing this series really has going for it is the whole game-real life dynamic, and related fate/free will discussions. For example, what kind of person Kirito is in real life versus who he is in the game, or how the game forces him to play in certain ways and/or interact with people differently than in "real" life. But even then, the series hasn't done too much with that yet.

@AURON570:

After going through episode 3 again, I felt they could have done better and build up more drama and tension up to Sachi's death. I didn't feel sad until I got to Kirito's scene where he listens to Sachi's last message. I have been reading from fans that they wanted Sachi to sing Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer.

I'm pretty sure that they made a typo in the title. I'm wondering how these guys are still alive. Does someone give them food through IV in the outside world?

Since Kirito blames himself, I don't think he ever join a guild again because he doesn't want to go through that hell again. For his real life, it's hard to say.

Way to think deep, Auron570!

I like episode 4. I kept thinking if Silica might get kill because of episode 3. My heart stops beating fast when it was a mellow, sweet episode.

Silica is pretty cute

With all of the fan service, we get tentacles! What the hell?!

Edit:

When I was making snapshots for both episode, I just realized there was more Silica shots than Sachi because episode 4 kept zooming on Silica's face.
