A series of robots built as an alien defense project cause more trouble than they are worth when they go rogue. Lesser, human-interfaced models go into combat against them-whichever way you want to dress it up, this means robots fighting, again, but this time the reason for the cliché is that this is a spin-off of a series of games, specifically Super Robot Wars Original Generation, that were made in a pastiche of the robot shows of the past and featured cameo appearances by many famous anime machines and pilots. So it is not derivative and disposable nonsense, then. However, this story takes place after the second release in the game series and restricts itself to robots and characters specifically created for the game, doubtless for copyright and licensing reasons.
