Today, or rather last evening, I pontificated on the popularity of Strike Witches-- and my lack of understanding of it. Feel free to set me straight, if you have some inkling as to why the show's such a relative hit.

The plot does actually pick up pace in the later episodes, but I really only watched it for the half-naked young girls (fully naked on the DVDs). =b

FYI, one fansubbing group even went so far as to increase the nudity on one of the ecchier DVD episodes by digitally editing out what little censorship there was, frame by frame.  Check that ep out & then get back to us. =b

"I'm into Strike Witches because I'm a huge pedo."

srsly. No other reason to like this show.

I am feeling immense relief at everyone's response. I think of myself as pretty open-minded and understanding, but I just couldn't get this show! @_@

I thoroughly enjoyed Strike Witches - and not just because of all of the loli thing.

The first episode if I remember clearly was an absolute bore save for the battle scene at the very beginning. Then, the anime progresses and it shows you the back-stories of every character once the main character settles into the Strike Witches unit.

It's pretty generic at times, but offers up some pretty lovable characters with some of my favorite art-styles in anime to date (the night-time episode was an absolute beauty to watch). The battle scenes were particularly well-done and it always feels refreshing somehow to see girls without pants and animal ears/tails shooting the crap out of alien ships with oversized weaponry.

If "not getting it" justifies not watching past the first episode, then you have no idea how many other animes I would have neglected.

Everyone tells me the fight scenes were great.... personally I thought they were ok, but since those and the supposed oh-so-great character interactions were the highlight of the show, I have to say...this show was pretty crappy...

The pantsu was ridiculous and un-endearing, the technical plane-girl/ history (by 'history' I mean the random no-reason ripping of famous pilots throughout history and tying them to these people) perspective of things was flat out nuts, and the story and enemies were about as one dimensional as they could possibly be. I mean seriously, the bad guys looked like the friggin pixel monsters from space invaders... you could probably have replaced them with that and nothing of value would have been lost too!

I had to sit down and marathon this turd with 3 other guys who were huge fans of it... I eventually got fed up around episode 10 when Yoshika went to the Neuroi nest....god I feel so stupid for keeping up with it that far. I really wish I could refund that time that could've been spent playing Kagetsu Tohya instead...

I had to spend the whole next day playing Guilty Gear and rereading Love Hina in an attempt to beat my brain back to it's senses and remind myself that there are still good things in this world...

ONElastthing: This show is a fanservice wank. No excuses. Not always in a pedo kind of way though, even though a lot of it is, but regardless it is definitely a fanservice show.

hazelnutman: Before you chastise me for only watching the first episode-- consider how many anime I try to watch. There's usually 25-40 new shows a season; even if I only manage to catch the first episode of HALF of them it's an awful lot :) I'm sorry, but if the director and creators can't figure out how to at least keep me moderately interested by the end of the first episode (which tend to have the highest production values), I simply can't afford to continue spending time on them.

Of course, part of it is also that while I'm willing to download anime to watch it (usually raws), my personal policy is to buy anything I watch more than an episode of-- importing from Japan if it remains unlicensed ($$$!), or from the US licensor if possible. When you add in actually PAYING for anime, your priorities on what you're willing to watch more of change somewhat. Then it's not just because I can't afford the time, it's also because I can't afford the money! ;)

???? You like Komodo no Jikan, which had a lot more controversy  surounding it considering its source material, but Strike Witches is odd? I've seen an episode of Komodo no Jikan and Strike Witches, and I'm not a fan of either. I don't see the appeal of either show whatsoever. Well, besides the obvious sexual perversion.

Apparently, Strike Witches atually won an award, but I don't know what for. Really, did the girls NEED to have no pants on? What is that for, aerodynamics?

EDIT: why'd my comment blank out? eh... I can't remember what it originally said...

You only watched the first episode, just lime me though I haven intentions on finishing the series at a later time since I found it interesting. I thought it was cute from what I saw so far.

I'm still baffled by the number of people that keep calling Strike Witches a "pedo show" or "little girl" show.  There's Lucchini, who is indeed 12... but she's the youngest.  Everyone else is 15 or older, (Minna is 19, for example, and Major Sakamoto is almost 21).  It's as though because there's fanservice and ONE lolita character it's suddenly a pedo show.  Yes they're young, but they are not, on the whole, 'little girls'.

The character interaction, arguably the only non-fanservice reason to watch the show, only really comes into play when everyone is together... this is an ensemble cast with 11 main members who are featured to some degree in EVERY episode... watching just the first episode and complaining that there's nothing there is like reading the jacked cover of a book complaining it was too short because there's only one paragraph there.  While I freely admit the pacing of the show could have been improved  to have an in media res introductory episode and feature Miyafuji's recruitment as a flashback in 2 and 3, I don't feel it hurts the series as a whole except to those people who are turned off by the slow start.
