Based on Fumikane Shimade's "Mecha Musume" illustrations, the series revolves around moe girls who are anthropomorphic WWII-era planes.
Set in an alternative 20th century where young girls use magic to pilot mechs that let them fly. The Strike Witches are military girls who have been tapped for their high potential in magic ability, creating a task force to fight the mysterious Neuroi aliens who attack. Each of the girls is loosely based on an actual World War II pilots, and the Striker Units are based on that pilot's own plane. The show is also famous for being fanservicey and for the female characters to always be wearing bloomers rather than pants.
