Based on Fumikane Shimade's "Mecha Musume" illustrations, the series revolves around moe girls who are anthropomorphic WWII-era planes.

Plot

Set in an alternative 20th century where young girls use magic to pilot mechs that let them fly. The Strike Witches are military girls who have been tapped for their high potential in magic ability, creating a task force to fight the mysterious Neuroi aliens who attack. Each of the girls is loosely based on an actual World War II pilots, and the Striker Units are based on that pilot's own plane. The show is also famous for being fanservicey and for the female characters to always be wearing bloomers rather than pants.

Strike Witches: The Witches of Africa is a doujinshi series co-authored by Humikane Shimada, Taka'aki Suzuki, and Takeshi Nogami. Unlike most other doujinshi, The Witches of Africa became part of the official canon to the light-novel series. Three separate doujinshi series were published that mainly followed Hanna-Justina Marseille during the North African Campaign of the war against the Neuroi. Each volume contained both manga and a part of the light-novel series Strike Witches: Der Stern von Afrika.

The first episode originally aired on July 3, 2008. The series ran for twelve episodes, the last airing on September 19, 2008.

Though originally censored for nudity for the TV airing, when released on DVD/Blu-ray in Japan they were released uncensored. Produced in six volumes that contained two episodes each. The first was released on September 26, 2008, and the last was on February 27, 2009.

The series was licensed by FUNimation Entertainment and released as a completed box set of all twelve episodes North America on March 30, 2010, and was streaming from FUNi's official website and HULU.
