In Street Fighter II V Ryu and Ken travel the world searching for new warriors to fight with. In the midst of their journey the find many friends and many more enemies, including the evil fighters of the Shadowlaw organization.

The TV series Streetfighter II V (1995) serves as a prequel to the game, in which teen versions of Ryu and Ken are trounced by Guile and set off on an around-the-world trip to learn from "the best of the best." Though there is a heroic effort to introduce deeper backstories for the kung-fu clotheshorses of the game (Chun Li is a young Hong Kong tour guide, Fei Long is an action-film star, etc.), the TV series is undistinguished, and even Sugii's direction rarely rises above the barely necessary. Matters are not helped by an English dub that persistently mispronounces "Ryu" throughout-an achievement roughly equivalent to dubbing Star Wars with Han Sulu. However, amid the relatively undemanding audience of fighting-game fans, the TV series could be considered a success-it certainly outlasted many of its more "popular" contemporaries.
