A lot of anime fans like steampunk. Steampunk cosplayers run amok at conventions, and steampunk anime like Last Exile and Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water have always been reasonably popular.

Atlus, makers of Shin Megami Tensei/Persona, have just made their first game announcement for their new project, Atlus Online-- a steampunk game called Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent. It'll be a play-for-free MMORPG, and it looks like you'll select between one of two nations: Rogwel, nation of technology, and Elerd, nation of magic.

If that doesn't sound very unique to you, the press release promises that it's a “fresh take on the standard 'fantasy' MMO.” The official website has already launched; those of us who pre-registered for Atlus Online should get access to the beta, whenever the heck that happens.

Now, it should be noted that Neo Steam is apparently not a brand-new game; after searching around the Atlus Online forums, I found someone talking about how it was formerly hosted by Gamenetwork. Any of you ever play this game? Tell us about it!

Hm, I'm not familiar with this particular game, no. But I am interested in seeing how Atlus USA's foray into MMOs goes. If nothing else, it'll probably be better localized than most MMORPGs. :)

I'm curious about it...MMOs don't usually appeal to me much (they're really too time-intensive, I'm usually too busy watching anime and reading manga so I can keep up for work to have spare time for something like an MMO!), but I'm fond of steampunk. <3
