"Shinryaku! Ika Musume", or in English "Invasion! Squid Girl," is a comedy about a young half-squid, half-girl, who plans on taking revenge on human beings for polluting her homeland, the sea. From here forward I'll use Ika-chan to refer to the character, and Ika Musume to refer to the actual anime.
Now, without going into details, Ika-chan is not very bright and does not think ahead. However she does have special Squid powers, she can use her powerful tentacles among other things. At first Ika-chan is not taken too seriously, from her appearance she just seems like a little girl cosplaying and getting too much into her role. As a demonstration, Ika-chan uses her tentacles to punch a hole in the wall of a restaurant. As such she finds herself in debted to family that owns the restaurant and works there to pay off the repairs.
And so, the series follows Ika-chan's day to day life as she meets different people, makes new friends, and learns about and experiences new things that she never knew about. In the end, Ika Musume is a story about a young child (Ika-chan) finding her way through the world. Sure, she can be very childish and has overly ambitious goals (taking over the world), but after all she is just a kid. So, watching Ika-chan is almost like watching a toddler try new things as they explore the world and people around them.
The serie's animation and music stay solid throughout. The hyperactive introduction song to the slow pop ballad of the ending song, it all comes together to convey a truly funny, loveable series. Early on in the series I felt that Ika-chan's childishness was getting on my nerves. However by the end of the series, after experiencing so much with Ika-chan on the little beach, I've grown to like her in spite of her childishness.
Ika Musume creates a great, loveable, laughter-filled, almost family-like atmosphere by the end of the series, and should not be missed!
