As a nerd who likes to sample everything that nerdom has to offer, I often compare and contrast things. This leads me to make recommendations based off things people like, hence my article last week recommending the anime NAGI NO ASUKARA to bronies (the self-professed adult fans of the new MY LITTLE PONY show, if you've been living under an internet rock). I most often do this with beer, but I can totally do it with cartoons as well!

So let me tell you, bronies: you are gonna love SQUID GIRL.

The eponymous Squid Girl is on a mission to subjugate all of mankind as punishment for them polluting the ocean. She surfaces on a beach in Japan, but instead of conquering all she sees with her prehensile hair-tentacles she winds up working for a beachfront restaurant. From there on it's slice of life, learning-about-the-human-world sort of stuff with misadventures based off misconceptions.

It's basically a reskin of SGT. FROG featuring a precocious child instead of a hapless alien.

Each episode contains three or four stories, allowing you to get a taste for the show rather quickly. Squid Girl terrorizes, the befriends, then works for the understanding Aizawa siblings at their restaurant, all the while looking adorable and threatening to subjugate all of humanity as soon as she's paid off her debts. It's good-natured, it's fun, and if you think Pinkie Pie is Best Pony you will love Squid Girl.

I also had a great experience with Squid Girl! I recommend it to anyone looking for something humorous, light, memorable and heart-warming. Both seasons 1 and 2 are available via Crunchyroll.com, but I enjoyed the first season much more than the second. Also I'm not a "bronie"... if that even matters.

I'm beginning to think that you just equate anything that's good with being perfect for MLP fans.

Eh...I would not say that as this is not a show I would consider "good" or that I think has many objective qualities for "good". It is a cute simple silly show. Not something I would like.

I would be interested in other takes on this idea. Among more recent shows what would a "lain, evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Hanibai Renmei, (not that these would necessarily all be the same) fan like.

@zaldar: Yeah but you hate anything lighthearted...

@sickVisionz: Not completly true I would say parts of Hanibai Renmei and Steins Gate are lighthearted. Now do I prefer things that are more than lighthearted? Yes that is true. I am enjoying Golden Time though and it is pretty lighthearted. (and I do watch Queen's blade and even I won't say that is a serious show...)

All of those (except Golden Time which I'm only singling out because I haven't seen it) have their dark moments compared to Squid Girl and other stuff that is designed to be silly and light the entire time with no dark arc around the horizon or somber element lasting more than like 3 minutes.
