A brief survey of the life and works of Kenji Miyazawa, animated for theatrical screenings in his hometown of Iwate during the centenary of his birth but only combined in this form for a December TV special. As in the adaptation of the same author's earlier Night on the Galactic Railroad, the main roles are taken by cats, and all visible signs are written in Esperanto in honor of the author's devotion to the artificial language-hence Ihatov and not Iwate. Young Kenji, a pacifist, is at odds with Japan's increasingly militaristic society in the days before WWII. He is also determined to pursue a career as an author and poet, much to the chagrin of his levelheaded father. The story of Miyazawa's brief life (he died in his thirties) is punctuated by brief interludes from his stories, in a style similar to the Diary of Anne Frank. Director Kawamori is better known today for Escaflowne and Macross.
