Chihiro's family is moving to a new town, but gets sidetracked looking for a shortcut. It turns out to be a trap and Chihiro's parents are turned into pigs. Can she save them all?
While driving to their new home, Chihiro's father tries to take a shortcut and ends up lost next to a strange (and abandoned) theme park. The parents find food and eat, but Chihiro refuses and wanders off. When she returns she finds her parents have been turned into pigs. Chihiro's distress is only made worse when she realizes that she's no longer in the normal world: her own body is disappearing. A strange boy named Haku appears, feeds her, and then takes her to the penthouse suite of the evil witch Yubaba. The only way Chihiro can survive in this spirit world long enough to save her parents is by working for Yubaba. Yubaba agrees to give Chihiro a job in exchange for her name-- she literally takes Chihiro's name from the contract, leaving behind a couple of radicals that can be read as "Sen," which Chihiro goes by from then on. After completing a variety of tasks, Haku and Sen effectively kidnap Yubaba's son Boh, and agree to return him in exchange for Sen's parents. Yubaba agrees, but only if Sen can pick her parents from a whole batch of pigs. Sen correctly states that none of the pigs presented are her parents and wins all of their freedom back. She also learns that Haku is actually the spirit of the river Kohaku, who saved her years ago when she fell into said river. This frees Haku from Yubaba's control as well.
