One of the Death Scythes, Shinigami-sama's personal weapons, in Soul Eater. He is also the father of Maka Albarn.
Spirit is one of the minor characters in Soul Eater, though he does take the spotlight from time to time. Spirit is more commonly known in the early episode of the anime and issues of the manga as "Death Scythe", though his real name is used more frequently as time progresses (and new Death Scythes appear). As his other name would imply, he is a Death Scythe, and one of the few deserving the name, according to Shinigami-sama, as his weapon form is, in fact, a scythe. During his days at Shibusen, he was partnered with Frank N. Stein, and later with Maka's mother, who is the meister that got him to the Death Scythe stage.
Spirit's personality quirks are centered mainly around his daughter. He is the father to Maka Albarn, though he is not together with Maka's mother anymore. Spirit is a womanizer, and had constantly cheated on Maka's mother with various women (even now he goes to clubs to indulge in the presence of women), though he still loved her. The cheating led to a divorce, which left Maka very bitter at her father. Spirit now does anything and everything in his power to get his daughter to accept him. He feels guilty because he's never able to help her; he's not even allowed to pay child support. This results in the majority of his appearences in the show to revolve around him trying to obtain Maka's acceptance.
The relationship he has with Stein is a shaky one. Spirit reveals in the course of the story that when he was partnered with Stein, Stein would perform experiments on him while he was sleeping. It has apparently left him frightful of Stein, though the two of them partner together very well when they need to.
