Speed Racer is based on the Japanese anime and manga. It originally aired in 1967 and features the exploits of Speed and his car, the Mach 5, best known for all its gadgets.

Speed Racer is widely known for its catchy theme song and the Mach 5, a vehicle with loads of gadgets. Under the original title, Mach Go Go Go, the manga ran from June 1966 to May 1968 and was created by Tatsuo Yoshida. There were 52 episodes of the anime, some taken from the manga stories with slight variations.

Speed's name was Go Mifune and the car was the Mach-go (since 'go' is Japanese for five). The episodes were brought to the United States in syndication by Trans-Lux. Peter Fernandez (who voiced several characters including Speed Racer and Racer X in an uncredited role) had the task of adapting, writing and directing the episodes. Often he only recieved a loose translation and had to create a story and dialogue to match the action.

The show recieved a lukewarm response. It wasn't until some years later that Speed Racer became a phenomenon spawning further series and comics by different publishers. In 2008 Warner Brothers studio released a live action movie.

Also in 2008, Nicktoons network released a new animated series which was a direct spin-off of the original series titled "Speed Racer The Next Generation" the series had a 26 episode run from 2008 to 2009 and was seemingly cancelled. However, it was revived and will start airing new episodes in March of 2011.
