Aliens are raining bombs down onto the earth, forcing humans to live underground-- but radioactivity is seeping into the ground, too. But hope is found in the form of an old Japanese battleship called Yamato and plans for a faster-than-light engine.
An alien race called Gamilas (or Gamilons) has attacked the earth with radioactive bombs, causing the surface of the Earth to become barren. Humans move underground, but over time the radioactivity of the bombs begins to seep through, putting them in danger once again. One day a space probe appears on Mars, offering a message from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar that says that she has a device that can cleanse the Earth. However, they must come to her planet to retrieve it. She includes blueprints for a faster-than-light engine, which the humans adapt to fit a Japanese battleship called Yamato. A crew of 114 leave the Earth to go to Iscandar and acquire the device that can save them all...if it really exists.
