Nanba and Mutta Hibito are brothers who dream of becoming astronauts. Nanba, the younger brother, has become an astronaut. Space Brothers follows Mutta as he struggles to achieve his dreams of becoming an astronaut, and more importantly being a model big brother.
Nanba Mutta is a hard working engineer at a car company in Japan. However, because of an altercation with his irritable boss, Mutta headbutts his boss and is fired. Elsewhere, over in U.S.A. his younger brother Nanba Hibito is training hard with NASA to go out into space as an astronaut. Mutta and Hibito's dreams are to become astronauts. Seeing as how Mutta is now unemployed and struggling to find a new job, it happens that JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, the japanese equivalent of NASA) is recruiting for a few new astronauts. Space Brothers follows Mutta as he strives to become an astronaut, and also maintain his dignity as an older brother. One of Mutta's mottos is "the older brother should always lead."
Episodes 52,53 and 54 are "recap" episodes, and as such are good entry points for people who wish to get watch the series without starting from the beginning. Episode 52 focuses on Mutta and his desire to be a strong older brother. Episode 53 focuses on Hibito, his experience on the Moon so far and Hibito's relationship with former astronaut Brian Jay. Episode 54 draws on a variety of episodes and events, from Hibito's launch into space to JAXA's exam in the sealed box environment.
