Soul Eater is an action adventure manga created by artist and writer, Atsushi Ohkubo. The first chapter was published in Square Enix's Gangan Powered on June 24, 2003, and began regular monthly serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan manga magazine on May 12, 2004.
The story of Maka Albarn, and her partner, Soul "Eater" Evans, attempt to collect ninety-nine kishin egg souls and a single witch soul in order to turn Soul Eater into a death scythe. Unfortunately for Maka and Soul, their first attempt didn't end too well, so they have no choice but to start over again. Alongside them are classmates: Black Star, Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, Kid and a cast of wonderfully wacky characters, including DWMA's head teacher, Shinigami-sama . With Maka's determination to be as strong as her mother, she's not going to let ANYTHING stand in her way.
Soul Eater began publication as a three part one-shot in two Gangan Powered special editions and one Gangan Wing issue (both Square Enix publication) between June 24 and November 26, 2003. It began it's regular monthly serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan manga magazine on May 12, 2004. Soul Eater Volume 1 in Japan was published by Square Enix's Gangan Comics on June 22, 2004.
An alternate spin-off/sequel was published called Soul Eater Not! in January 12, 2011. The story focuses on a Meister named Tsugumi Harudori, Meme, and Anya. Some of the events in the time line are changed from the original story. Anya is outed as a witch, but Medusa is still the school's nurse and Sid is still living when the story begins.
In North America, Soul Eater was licensed by Yen Press. It was first published in the Yen Plus manga anthology magazine starting on July 29, 2008. The first volume was later released on October 27, 2009. The series has been published without edits or censorship, often leaving all the art alone and leaving in Japanese text on the page.
One of the few alterations done in Soul Eater by Yen Press was to the name of the school. In the Japanese manga it's often refereed to as Shibusen. In both the manga and anime adaptations of the series, Shibusen is called the Death Weapon Meister Academy or DWMA for short.
The meister of Soul Eater. She is a young and determined student, who won't let anything get in her path to success. Her single-minded focus stems from her anger at her father, who divorced her mother due to his constant flirting with other women.
Maka's weapon. He's very laid back and often attempts to be the "cool" person in whatever situation he's in. Although he and Maka have a tendency to argue at times, he is still fiercely loyal to her.
The meister of Tsubaki, and a ninja. Black Star is rambunctious, load, and extremely arrogant, which is at odds with his upbringing. He also claims to be a "Big" man, and aims to surpass all others. He does, however, have extraordinary physical capabilities for his age.
Black Star's weapon. Unlike Black Star, Tsubaki is gentle and kind, which allows her to tolerate him at times when others would grow angry with him.
The son of Shinigami-sama himself, and meister of the Thompson twins. Kid, as he is usually referred to, suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder: more specifically, everything must be perfectly aligned and symmetrical. If it isn't he has a nervous breakdown.
Twin sisters, and Kid's weapons. Liz is the elder, a cynical young woman, while Patty is the younger, a cheerful girl. The two of them, although initially attempting to exploit Death, are now fiercely loyal to him.
