A group of students at the Shinigami school (along with their human weapons) train to make their weapons strong enough to be used by Shinigami-sama himself.
Hard-working Maka and uber-"cool" Soul; egomaniac Black Star and patient Tsubaki; OCD Death the Kid and Patty and Liz Thompson: these are the primary groups of Shinigami Meister-in-training and their weapons, all attending the Shinigami Weapons Meister Vocational Academy. Each student's ultimate goal is to feed their human weapon 99 human souls and the soul of one witch, which makes their weapon usable by full-fledged shinigami. In the meantime, they defeat humans who have or will become kishin, evil demon gods that throw the world out of balance.-
