I spotted a Crunchyroll article on Game Stop ending all Playstation 2 trade-ins and related merchandising. In that article, I didn't notice that Sony had discontinued manufacturing Playstation 2 consoles back in January 2013. I thought Sony had stopped producing PS2 consoles when the PS3 came in town.

My personal experience with Sony games is short. I was a Nintendo fanboy back in the 90's when the neighbor boys and girls had most Nintendo 64 games. Only one person on the block had a Playstation 1 console. That's how I came into the video game experience. I went with Nintendo, and it was my first console. I got into Playstation when I was playing with my neighbor during that decade but never own a Sony console. It was up until January 2012 that I bought the Playstation 2 console and the following games: Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 for my little sister as a late Christmas gift. I was too poor and had to work a 2nd job because I don't get paid at my family restaurant. On a related note, I didn't know Re:Chains of Memories was the sequel to Kingdom Hearts 1, but that's another story.

Now for the blog, I discover I'm an RPG fan as I work the wiki pages at Giant Bomb. I own these games:

  • Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Re:Chain of Memories
  • Legend of Mana
  • Dark Cloud

That is all I have.

It's almost summer and I need a break from Anime Vice, Anime Wikia communities, and anime stuff. I'm open to anything. Though, I admit I'm scared of Silent Hill and other horror games. My neighbor's older brother enjoys forcing my friend and I to play Silent Hill in the dark. It was a bit traumatizing.

If there was anyone who deserved a break, it would be you. Have a good one!

Here are a list of great games. Great ready for a huge list of awesome:

  • Shadow of the Colossus - It is a short game, but the game is a masterpiece. The story is the most part because the game does not hold your hand in telling the story and leaves you to make your own interpretations.
  • Ico - Don't know much about this game other than it is game Shadow of Colossus is the spiritual sequel of. I do however, heard that it was fantastic.
  • Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories - You know you want this.
  • Persona 4, Person 3 - It's Persona. What more needs to be said. Even though it was a game released for the PS2, people are begging to see it on the PS3 even to this day. I'm still begging Atlus for a PS3 copy. Sadly Sony has decided to use Persona has a headliner for their Vita.
  • Star Ocean Til the End of Time - It has tons of content (the game comes with 2 discs worth of single player campaign). The story had loads of twists and turns and has a Final Fantasyesque soundtrack (and one hilarious out of place soundtrack in the middle).
  • Psychonauts - It's still played by people to this very day.
  • Dark Cloud 2 - Improves upon everything you liked from the first game.

@takashichea:

I'm pretty confident you can use my collection as a good starting point for PS2 RPGs (and some non-RPG stuff). There's a few novelty items in the list (Stretch Panic, Mr. Mosquito) but for the most part it's games I really love or was interested in enough to buy.

Having owned and played my PS2 quite a bit while I was going through unemployment, I could make some recommendations:

Final Fantasy X- See you're an RPG fan and Final Fantasy games are the cream of the crop for the genre. Played the heck out of this game which has enough damn replayability to it with side quests, battling hidden bosses and playing Blitzball.

Tekken 5- If you like fighting games, this is one of the titles of choice for the PS2 with its large cast of characters, plenty of unlockables to customize character appearances, an action game like mode called Devil Within and even the option to play the arcade versions of the first three Tekken games.

Ico- Had this game on me for a bit before I had to wind up selling it when money got tight for me due to unemployment. A very beautiful and unique game with its gorgeous scenery and renderings of the two lead characters, on top of having an original gameplay element where you solve puzzles and stop shadowy creatures while guiding around the mysterious girl named Yorda.

Shinobi- If you're up for a challenge, Shinobi's got quite the rep for its high difficulty in conquering different enemies and bosses, tricky environments and having to make sure that the sword you use to kill enemies stays "fed" well enough so it doesn't drain your life bar.

@Acura_Max:

I heard good stuff about Psychonauts. Ever since the Persona craze in Anime Vice and Giant Bomb due to the Persona 4: The Animation anime, I wanted to try out Persona. Didn't know which one to start. I figure it would be like Final Fantasy where the titles are stand alone. I have to look it up. Shadow of Colossus's premise reminds me of Pandora's Tower when I saw its trailer on Crunchyroll a while back.

From what I heard, Dark Cloud and its sequel are completely different beasts. Like sickVisionz said, different strokes for different folks. I'll find out if Dark Cloud 2 would capture my heart like Dark Cloud did.

Thanks for the recommendations!

@rubberluffy:

Thanks for the list! As I was browsing, I notice .Hack. Since I did the Sword Art Online and .Hack Similarities and Differences in Anime Vice, I wanted to try .Hack. Though, there was a lot of titles to start on. Ratchet and Clank would be good for my little brother. Dang, there are a lot of games I never heard of. Okami looks interesting.

@Dream:

Thanks! Oh, Kingdom Hearts was the gateway drug to Final Fantasy. My little sister wanted to play the game where Squall was in. Though, I'm such a dummy and didn't do my research. I ended up buying Final Fantasy VII where Cloud was the hero. In the end, my little sis enjoyed the game. I still haven't bought FF VIII for her. Need to get some cash. The old games are expensive for some odd reason. The digital versions on Playstation Network are much cheaper.

Tekken - Looks zany. Wow, a kangaroo and a bear? I probably enjoyed it since I'm a Super Smash Bros fan. I'll see if I can survive in that hardcore ninja game.

@takashichea: If you want to get started on the .Hack series, there are about 7 main titles. Four pertain to Kite's story and the other three deal with Haseo. In terms of story, Haseo's story takes place after Kite's, but you can play his games without missing a beat. They are separate stories. There are trivial facts like how Haseo makes a cameo in Kite's game, and was a main character in the .Hack Limited series. However, the game will not mention that part of the story at all. For me, I prefer Kite's games. Sure, they may not have as much variety as the new .Hack games, but I like the atmosphere and sometimes surreal nature of some of the bosses. Also, I found Kite's series more challenging since the enemies were more inclined to impose status effects upon my party.

Kite Quadrilogy:

  • Infection
  • Mutation
  • Outbreak
  • Quarantine

Haseo 's trilogy

  • Rebirth
  • Reminisce
  • Redemption

@katmic:

Well, let me put this way. Video games are like anime and manga series when they both have genres. RPG is a genre of games. You can't based all RPGs are like Dragon Age. There are so many different factors. There are two main types: Western and Japanese. The story can be linear or nonlinear. There so much different mechanics in playing and leveling up. There could be another game in Dragon Age's genre that you might enjoy. You just got to keep looking.

Always wanted to play that game myself.

Final Fantasy X and X-2. Also, they are getting a PS3 upgrade soon. :D

OMG Mind has gone-a-blank. Personal problem years ago, I had to leave a lot of my PSX and PS2 games behind. :(

@takashichea: Soul Calibur III

It had an awesome character creation mode, that allowed you to use your character in a strategy paradigm, while also keeping the integrity of it being a fighting game.

@takashichea: If you're getting Persona 3, get the FES version. The best of the 3 versions imo.

Also look up the following:

  • Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (there are quite a few SMT titles out there, I found this one the most interesting. Dante from DMC shows up as a recruitable character in this one)
  • Front Mission 4 (Squaresoft RPG with mechs!)
  • Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (Ninja game where stealth is actually necessary)
  • Ratchet & Clank series (any of them are fun)
  • Jak & Daxter series (series didn't pick up until #2 imo, but you might like the first one)
  • Xenosaga trilogy (if you can stomach a shitton of cutscenes with a side of gameplay).
  • Final Fantasy X (International Edition if you can swing it, otherwise still pretty good).
  • Rogue Galaxy (sci-fi RPG made by the Dark Cloud people, features surprisingly good voice acting including Steve Blum).

@takashichea:

It should be noted that the PS3 has Okami HD as a downloadable, which is definitely the best version (there's a Wii port, too). Fucking GORGEOUS game. Best Zelda game, too. Just a bit easy combat-wise.

The Suikoden series (which I have all the main titles of) is great too, except for S4 (okay game, bad Suikoden). A mix of turnbased RPG combat with some turnbased Strategy war battles, and 108 characters in each you have to find and recruit to build your army/improve your headquarters. Suikoden 1 (originally PSX) is up on PSN if you have a PS3/PSP/Vita, but S2 (also PSX) isn't and will run your quite a bit of dough for a physical copy. I spend 90 bucks on used copy a few years ago, and it wasn't even in the best condition (someone ripped out all the manual pages). 3-5 are on the PS2 though, but 5 is the one I had a hardest time getting a hold of.

Taka is right. I'm playing Dragon Age Origins right now and it is NOT for anyone new to the genre of RPGs. This game is for the hardcore RPG community since it assumes that you understand the basic RPG archetypes and tropes such as tanks and clerics. There are other western RPGs that are more accessible and don't ask you play a certain way. Here are a good few:

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Fallout 3
  • Mass Effect Series
  • The Witcher Series
  • Telltale's The Walking Dead
  • Heavy Rain

To me it was a great secondary console because all the DBZ games were on it. GameCube was always my first choice though. PS2 had tons and tons of exclusives though, same with PS3 only more so since most PS3 games are on Xbox 360 as well. There are a lot of good games though, The Sims 2 was the same for GameCube, Xbox, and PS2, and while I only own the Xbox and GameCube versions I've had friends who own the PS2 version as well and they tell me it's exactly the same. It's not really a game that would appeal to everyone but it's my 2nd favorite game of all time.

I can believe no one had mentioned this yet. Shame on you all.

The Metal Gear Solid series - These games do some interesting things. For example, in the first one there's a boss that knows what you have been playing recently. In the third game, there this part where your character has go up stream in a river and at that part every enemy that you ever killed will flow down the river at that scene. If you didn't kill anyone, then no one flows down river and you don't get hindered.

@rubberluffy: @Supreme Marvel:

I'm considering getting the PS3 ones for convenience.

@DocHaus:

Weird, Jax and Daxter remind me of Ratchet and Clank. I'll definitely try that one. Rogue Galaxy sounds promising.

@Jlynnana:

Soul Calbur 2 was fun on the GCN. I'll try Soul Calibur 3.

@DBZ_universe:

You know what, I haven't tried any of the DBZ fighting games. Oh, I probably won't play Resident Evil or Grand Theft Auto. I'm not much of a fan for those series.

@Acura_Max:

I'm new to the stealth games. It will be a test of patience for me.

Thanks guys.

@takashichea: You should try Bully. That game is so fun.

@Acura_Max: Thanks for spoiling it, asshole.

But like he said, the Metal Gear series is a must-play.
