There are not too many anime series that I even give a second glance these days - sometimes it seems that this industry has gotten so lazy and mass-produced that more focus is put on what will (or might) sell than good, original writing, artwork, graphics, and a solid story.  Although this has become somewhat less true in recent times as major anime companies are going under one after another, anime that follow a a predictable formula are still too many.

I also realize that I am writing this after the fact - I just recently finished watching the last few episodes. Solty Rei takes place years after an accident called the Blast Fall, which left many people without family members, memories, or good health.  Roy Revant, a bounty hunter is convinced that his daughter is still alive somewhere and has not given up hope.  While on the job, Roy meets a little humanoid girl named Solty and becomes her caretaker.  Solty constantly seeks Roy's love and attention as a parent, but Roy does not seem to warm up to her.

The story also focuses on certain social issues such as classism, as "unregistered residents" do not have the same rights or quality of life as "registered" citizens. The central characters include members of both sides, each with their own respective agenda.

What I personally liked about this series was the simple story that gradually became more complex - it did not just follow a linear, predictable path.  Every time I thought the story was about to get boring or predictable, it threw me right through a loop.  In addition, Solty Rei almost completely lacks a problem that plagues far too many series (even the good ones!): there are few to no episodes that were pure filler.  If there is one thing I can't stand, it's filler episodes that do not advance the plot or seem to serve no real purpose.

Solty Rei is definitely worth checking out.  I got the box set for around $68, but you can easily find each of the 6 discs separately for around $5 apiece. I didn't know that at the time...I found out when my box set came without disc 5, I didn't open it for a year so it was beyond returning, and I needed a replacement. Moral of the story? Solty Rei is awesome, but always check your boxes immediately...
