Soi Fon is the Captain of the 2nd Protection Squad of Soul Society and Commander of the Special Forces. She is stern and cold with her subordinates and unyielding in her devotion to the laws of Soul Society. Soi Fon is a master of shunpo and hand-to-hand combat.
Soi Fon grew up in the Soul Society as Shaoilin Fon (蜂 梢綾（フォン シャオリン）). As a child from the House of Fon, she was the youngest of six. The Fon house served the Shihoin noble house for nine generations. A family of executioners and assassins. She abandoned the name Shaolin and took the name Soi Fon, the name used by her grandmother. All five of her brothers died in their service, and while she did mourn their passing. She was also ashamed at their lack of strength.
The one she looked up to above all was the 22nd head of the Shihoin Family, Yoruichi Shihoin. She was captivated by her beauty, skill, elegance, and frightening power. Soi Fon's training and skill caught the attention of Yoruichi, and assigned her to be her chief of guard. Yoruichi adopted Soi Fon as her protege, an unheard of honor beforehand and one that Soi Fon initially found very hard to accept. Even in battle, she was happy to be by Yoruichi's side.
When Yoruichi left Soul Society to save her friend Kisuke, Shaolin was left feeling abandoned and confused, angry more at the fact Yoruichi betrayed the promise that they would be together as best friends forever, than the fact she betrayed soul society. She then went on to train herself mercilessly to try and surpass Yoruichi, defeat her and earn the titles she was stripped of.
The character of Soi Fon is a supporting character of the BLEACH series that was created by Tite Kubo, It first began serialization Weekly Shonen Jump in August 2001. She was first introduced during the Soul Society: The Sneak Entry story arc that began in Volume 9.
She first appeared in BLEACH Volume 10, CH. 81 "Twelve Tone Rendezvous", and her first anime appearance was in BLEACH - Episode 24 "Assemble! The 13 Division". Her character in the Japanese series has two voice actresses. The first actress was Tomoko Kawakami (Ep. 24-182) and was later replaced by Hōko Kuwashima (Ep. 206+). The U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is performed by Karen Strassman.
In the original Japanese version of BLEACH, Soi Fon's name in English is spelled as "Sui-Feng". Her name comes from the Pinyin transliteration of Mandarin Chinese. This is seen in the contents of the BLEACH: Official Character Book 2 MASKED. When she first appeared in the manga, Soi Fon didn't have her pair of long braids covered in white ribbons. The ribbons don't appear until Vol. 12 Ch. 99.
Her first appearance in character popularity polls was in the 2nd poll that was released in Volume 13. She ranked 44th place with only 29 votes. In the 3rd poll published with Ch. 214, she jumped to 16th place with 1628 votes. In the 4th poll published with Ch. 307, she fell to 25th place with 1228 votes. " I have no interest in whether it is right or wrong. All I care about is executing orders as a captain of the Gotei 13. All who get in my way are my enemies. All enemies must be slain. That is all that matters. "
Soi Fon - BLEACH Vol. 16 Ch. 138
Soifon tends to look very reserved in her normal captain robes. She wears her hair short for the most part except for two tails of hair that are bound behind her head, one behind each shoulder. This choice of hair is practical both for modesty and because she is a hand to hand combatant, and long hair might get in the way during combat or obscure vision.
Birthday: 11 February
Eyes: Khaki Green
Height: 150cm (5'0")
Weight: 38 kg (83lbs)
Beneath her robes she wears the female Captains leather armour which is tight fitting and designed for manoeuvrability, it has no sleeves or covering on the back. The reason for this is revealed in her fight with Yoruichi Shihouin, whom designed it: she had designed the 2nd division leaders attire for the use of a special technique known as flash cry, which creates a burning fire across the users back which allows for blasts of energy and protection, like two burning energy wings. This would destroy normal clothing.
Soifon is a very loyal and honourable person. At the very core of her personality, she is a dedicated worker who believes in traditions and a strict lawful system of life. She is unwavering in her beliefs on the surface, and tries to stand up as an example for her followers. At times she can act very waspish in her remarks on others behaviour. Despite this, she heads the 2nd division, which is composed of covert operatives who act as soul societies espionage and intelligence gathering experts, and if need be, assassins. Outwardly she appears very reserved and dedicated, but in moments of great import she breaks and becomes a very insecure in her abilities. This goes doubly so when she meets her former captain Yoruichi Shihouin whom she has idolised since she was a child and felt a great honour serving under. This is actually an important part of her character: she has a great respect for Yoruichi Shihouin that borders on obsession: Yoruichi was her stereotypical fairy tale princess when growing up that she always saw from afar. She was overcome with joy when she gained a place serving her in her court. When she got to know the real Yoruichi however, she was astounded at her lack of tact past public formalities and always tried to get her to act like the princess she envisioned, which Yoruichi resisted. Yoruichi's betrayal and exile from soul society damaged Soifon irrevocably and left lasting mental scars.
Soi Fon was summoned to a meeting of the Gotei 13 Captains after the arrest of Rukia Kuchiki. Chief-Commander Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai announced that the Soul Society had been infiltrated by four humans. One using the powers of a Soul Reaper.
The invaders were able to break into the Soul Society and Lieutenant Renji Abarai was defeated by one. At the captain's meeting Yamamoto warned them that this could lead to a full scale war. In the following days, the body of Sousuke Aizen was found murdered, and Rukia Kuchiki's execution date was suddenly advanced. Soi Fon's lieutenant, Marechiyo Omaeda, talked about the rumors how the execution might not me legitimate. She didn't care since they were orders, and warned him that disobeying orders could even make him her enemy. They left the the execution grounds at Sokyoku Hill. The Sokyoku was destroyed by Captains Ukitake and Kyouraku, and Rukia was freed by Ichigo Kurosaki. She recognized the cloak he was wearing had the Shihoin crest. Soi Fon commanded the lieutenants to give chase, but Kurosaki defeated them all bare handed. Soi Fon was then dragged off Sokyoku Hill by a masked woman who revealed herself to be Yoruichi.
In the forest, Soi Fon and Yoruichi fight in hand to hand combat, but neither can gain the upper hand. Yoruichi also showed that she is still a Flash Step master. Soi Fon released the Shikai of her Suzumebachi and is able to sting Yoruichi on her chest, back, arm, and face but can't land a second hit on either mark. She shows off the technique she only recently finished that combines Kidō and Hakuda together, but she hasn't named yet. To her shock, Yoruichi says it's called Shunko and she developed it long ago. Yoruichi's attack is able to cancel out each one of her's. Soi Fon is enraged and curses Yoruichi. She thought her absence would let her over come her. She screams and curses at her former commander for betraying her, but her tone weakens. With tears filling her eyes, she asked why Yoruichi left and didn't take her with her.
Their battle was over, but Aizen was revealed to be alive. He had manipulated the whole situation, murdered the Central 46, and was helped by Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tousen. It was all the claim the Hogyoku trapped in Rukia's fake Gigai form. Yoruichi and Soi Fon tried to capture them, but he and his allies escaped through a portal to Hueco Mundo, the Hollow's world. With the betrayal revealed, the humans were able to leave as allies for the battle with Aizen to come.
Soi Fon was once again summoned to a captain's meeting to discuss the appearance of powerful humanoid Hollow's called Arrancar. Several Gotei 13 lieutenants were sent to Earth under the command of Captain Hitsugaya.
To undermine Aizen's plan to destroy Karakura Town to create the King's Key, the real town was transported to the Soul Society with it's people, and a fake was put in it's place. When Aizen appeared with his Espada army, he was greeted by Soi Fon and all the remaining Captains and Lieutenants. Soi Fon fought against the Arrancar Ggio Vega and Omeda was running from Nirgge Parduoc. She openly admitted that she didn't care if Omeda died since it meant she could get a new lieutenant. She's able to bind Ggio, but he escapes before she can sting him with the Suzumebachi. He tosses her away and Ggio releases his Zanpakuto to increase his power. She refuses to fall for Ggio's taunting. It worked in reverse and his rage blinded him for the killing blow with Suzumebachi twice, but it felt like one hit.
With Ggio Vega dead, Soi Fon and Omeda then fought against Barragan Luisenbarn, the Segunda Espada. In their fight, none of Soi Fon's kicks could hit. All attacks would slow down before impact. He reveals that his power is age and can control time. After touching her left shoulder, she feels the bones break in her arm. He releasedr his Zanpakuto. Then looking down in horror, she saw her broken arm rotting to the bone. In a panic, she orders Omeda to cut off her arm before this infection can spread. While she has Omeda acting as a decoy, she prepares her Bankai. She had to properly wrap her waist due to it's weight. She fired the Bankai missile and was pushed away by the pressure wave from the explosion that effected the whole battlefield. After the dust cleared, Barragan is still alive.
As things looked their darkest, the Gotei 13 were joined against Aizen by the Visored, the former Gotei 13 members who had powers of Hollows. Hachigen Ushōda came to the aid of Soi Fon and Omeda against Barragan. He needed the help of her Bankai, but she refused until he made her an offer to seal Kisuke Urahara in one of his barriers for a month. He created a barrier around Barragan that wasn't for capturing him, but condensing the explosive force of Soi Fon's Bakai. This still didn't kill the Espada, but he was eventually killed when Hachigen transported his own age infected arm into the belly of Barragan, and he fell victim to his own power.
Soi Fon, the remaining Gotei 13, and Visored attacked Aizen together to allow Ichigo Kurosaki to learn how to battle Aizen. She used her Shunpo to create a clone attack and Hitsugaya froze him, but the Nigeki Kessatsu attack failed. It's revealed that they were under Aizen's hypnosis and had struck Momo Hinamori. The chaos that followed left them all open for Aizen to strike them all down at once. Aizen was able to leave to the Soul Society, but was finally defeated by Kurosaki. The cost was his Soul Reaper powers.
Like her tutor and friend Yoruichi, Soifon is a master physical combatant who prefers to use hand to hand techniques to defeat her opponents. Her Zanpaktou displays this in its form: becoming a claw-like stinger that covers the middle finger of the hand which automatically kills any opponent who is struck by it twice in the same general area.
She also possesses the standard shinigami abilities that come as part of being a spirit being: the ability to walk on air and use Kidou ( demon magic). In the 'real world' she is also able to pass through physical objects as a spirit being.
Soifon's Zanpaktou is named Suzumebachi, or 'Hornet' in its translated form. This is likely in reference to her very hierarchical and 'wasplike' view of society and rules and regulations, as well as her waspish temperament. As a normal sword it appears as a Wakazashi with a hilt that looks akin to a chinese Dao sword.
Once in its Shikai released form, it becomes a stinger which is worn as a half glove that covers the palm and the middle finger, the middle finger becomes covered by a metal claw/stinger which can be used to strike at an opponent. The release command is 'sting all enemies to death'. Any opponent struck by this stinger gains a mark that lasts for a long period of time by Soifons will. if struck again in that area they automatically die. It is explained that this is caused by a type of venom it secretes, this is also able to work as an anti-venom, as long as Soifon does not strike an poisoned area twice.
Known as Jakuhō Raikōben ("Hornet Thunder Whip"), when it's release is finally seen, we learn of Soifon's reluctance to use it. It's appearance is boorish and uncharacteristic for a Captain who specializes in covert and stealthy operations. Suzumebachi takes the form of large armor that covers Soifon's entire right arm and a face shield that covers the right side of her face. Jakuhō Raikōben's ability is that it has the ability of launching a missle at the base of the armor's arm. Once launched the missle adopts fins that assists it in the aim of target. The impact is a devastating explosion of spirit energy. The magnitude of the blast is so great it leaves Soifon drained and exhausted.
