Literally "girl," this term is used to refer to manga aimed at young to teenage girls.
Overview
Just like shounen is synonymic to boy, shoujo literally means young girl in Japanese. In the manga subculture, shoujo is referred to a series that is geared towards a young female audience from ages 10 to 18. The focus of shoujo is usually through the relationships and emotions that the characters go through. Manga that is considered shoujo is often very detailed and everything is seen as beautiful. The main sub-genres within shoujo is drama and romance but there is universal genres for shoujo. One of the most famous example of a shoujo series is the Sailor Moon franchise that features an all female cast lead.
However, some shows that are identified as shoujo are actually either shounen or seinen. Chobits, for example, is often misidentified as a shoujo story even though it started out in a seinen (men's) magazine.
