1960- . Born in Toyama Prefecture, he began studying mechanical engineering at Keio University, but dropped out when his aptitude for realistic fantasy machines led to offers in anime. His first design sale, a "guest" robot in Captain Harlock in 1978, led to work with the design studio Studio Nue, and to major contributions to the look of Macross and Dangaioh. Moving into animation direction and writing, he demonstrated a grasp of mature themes as a show-runner on Macross Plus (1994), leading to his innovative attempt to reach a dual male/female audience in Escaflowne (1996). Kawamori has been acquainted since high school with Haruhiko Mikimoto, Yutaka Izubuchi, and writer Hiroshi Onogi through their association with the science fiction event Kuri Con, and the group has often worked together since.
