The protagonist of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Pilot of Eva Unit-01. Has a distance personalty and is unable to express his true feelings around his fellow peers. He only accepts orders to prevent from being alienated. The son of NERV commander Gendo Ikari and late mother Yui Ikari.

Origin

Shinji was born as the only son to Gendo and Yui Ikari. During his childhood, Shinji bore witness to Yui dying on the job in an incident involving one of the humanoid mecha known as Evangelions. She had been assimilated by the very machine she was working on. Both of his parents were working for NERV at that time. Gendo abandoned Shinji after Yui's death, leaving him in the care of a teacher so he could focus on the Human Instrumentality Project that he and Yui had been working on.

Creation

Shinji was created as the main male lead character for Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime series. His character design was based on Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's design for Nadia from an earlier Gainax work called Nadia: Secret of Blue Water and his birthday was based off his Japanese seiyuu, Megumi Ogata. Besides the TV anime, Shinji has appeared in Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga adaptation to Eva, the Rebuild of Evangelion film series and a number of manga spinoffs to the series. For English adaptations of Evangelion, Shinji is voiced by Spike Spencer.

Evolution

Appearance

Shinji is 14 years old throughout Evangelion, having brown hair and blue eyes (brown in the manga). For normal clothing, he is seen wearing a white dress shirt that is tucked into a pair of black pants and wears a pair of black shoes. While piloting Eva Unit 01, Shinji wears a blue-colored plug suit.

Personality

While there are differences in his personality between source materials for Evangelion, all of them portray Shinji's mentality as being scarred heavily from the traumatic events that he dealt with from his past. The TV anime portrays him as being rather timid and reserved in his interactions with other people and having a great fear of getting too close to others. The manga take on his character has a more bitter and angered personality, though he is more open in expressing himself and has a deep desire for gaining acceptance from others. The Rebuild version of Shinji combines traits from both versions of his character as he still angers easily, yet is reserved and sociable toward others.

Relationships

  • Gendo Ikari- Shinji's relationship with his father is a rather strained one due to the years they were apart. While Shinji seeks to gain his father's acceptance and understanding, Gendo mostly sees him as a tool in his plans to advance his own version of the Human Instrumentality Project.
  • Rei Ayanami- Shinji finds himself having a mysterious attraction to Rei throughout the series as her appearance makes him think of his mother, unaware of Rei being a clone of his mother mixed with the blood of Lilith. Their relationship is a closer one for manga and Rebuild adaptations of Eva as Rei is more receptive to her interactions with Shinji. The bond between the two becomes strong as such where Rei defies Gendo's plans for Instrumentality and decides to leave the Earth's fate to Shinji.
  • Asuka Langley Soryu- Asuka and Shinji's relationship is a rather complicated one. While both seem to have a romantic attraction to one another, their clashing mental states prevent them from developing any kind of stable chemistry with one another in many of their interactions. Shinji seems to view Asuka as a source of strength as he gains motivation from her to fight against the Angels and Asuka's coma after fighting Arael is one of the major catalysts that lead to Shinji's mental breakdown later in the series. Their relationship is somewhat more stable in the manga, though both often get in arguments with one another as Shinji is more defiant of Asuka's prideful attitude. The Rebuild series shows them having a more easier time bonding as Asuka assists in preparations for Rei's dinner party to settle the strain in Gendo and Shinji's relationship.
  • Misato Katsuragi- Shinji winds up staying in Misato's apartment throughout the series, with the boy immediately becoming disgusted with the apartment's messy conditions. Despite this, the two develop a close relationship with one another as they understand their insecurities and personal problems. Both share a personal connection with one another in that they have faced tragic pasts that resulted in the losses of family members they loved.
  • Kaworu Nagisa- While the relationship with Kaworu and Shinji is a controversial one due to its ambiguous nature, it is apparent that Shinji viewed him as a sort of idealized figure as he was able to openly admit to him his inner doubts that he was not comfortable relating with other people. In the manga though, Shinji is hateful toward Kaworu and becomes angered with the boy's lack of understanding on human emotions and morals.
