Former captain of the 5th division, Unofficial Leader of the Vizards.
Shinji is the unofficial leader and recruiter of the Vizards, a organisation of former Shinigami who obtained Hollow powers and were exiled from Soul Society.
Shinji is pretty laid back and is rather immature and child like. This can be seen when he pulls faces back at Hiyori and takes the mick out of her, he is often the victim of being either kicked in the face, or smashed in the face with a sandal by Hiyori.
Shinji first appeared as a new transfer student in Ichigo's class, soon after he reveals that he is a member of the vizards to Ichigo, trying to pusuade him to join the organisation. Ichigo refuses the offer but is told by Shinji that eventually his inner hollow will take over him if he doesnt learn to control it. Due to this eventually, Ichigo goes to the Vizards, he trys to force information out of them but it fails, eventually Ichigo joins them.
Shinji takes part in training Ichigo, and takes part in Holding off Hollow Ichigo with the other Vizards as Ichigo fought his inner Hollow. He also used his hollow powers to fight Grimmjow, saving Ichigo and Rukia in the process, in the fight he held the upper hand, and would have defeated Grimmjaw if the Espada wasn't teleported back to Hueco Mundo.
It is later revealed in the turn back the pendulum arc that Shinji was the former captain of the 5th Division, his lieutenant was Sosuke Aizen, he was one of the victims to Aizens experiments and was forced into the process of Hollowfication. Uruhara is then arrested, being set up by Aizen, Gin and Tousen and accused of conducting illegal hollowfication experiments.
The central 46 demand that Shinji along with the other Vizards are to be executed as Hollows. Uruhara takes the vizards as well as fake bodies for them and flee to the real world.
Shinji along with the other Vizards are then seen leaving there base, preparing to fight against Aizen.
In the battle between The Espada and Gotei 13, the Espada start to gain the upper hand when Wonderweiss and Superchunky arrive suddenly, two captains are quickly taken out and the fire prison surrounding Aizen, Tousen and Gin. Suddenly a voice appeared "Hold on a sec, Aizen, Its been a while" Shinji announces. As the Vizards arrive.
Shinji then asks the Vizards if they wish to speak to anyone in the Gotei 13 which everyone answers no except Lisa who goes to see her former Captain. Shinji then goes to speak to the Captain Commander. He reveals that he is not on their side, their against Aizen and their on Ichigo's Side. He also tells the captain comander that hes not for revenge and that he doesnt care about the Shinigami, hes only he for revenge against Aizen.
Shortly after he along with the other Vizards don their masks and begin to destroy the Menos Grande's. Shinji appears at Aizen and goes to slash at him but it interupted by Tousen. Shinji is cut slightly on his face, Tousen is about to attack him again but it interupted by Komamura who tells Shinji that for now they are allies, Shinji replies with "Sure you wanna trust strange looking guys like us, though your pretty strange looking as well", shortly after Hisagi also joins the fight.
Soon after all this and while the other Vizard's were fighting the first and third Espada, Shinji ended up fighting against Gin, They were interrupted by Aizen who suddenly appeared in front of Harribel and slashed her, claiming he didnt need weaklings.
Eventually Aizen clashed with Shinji, whom released his shikai taking them both to the inverted world, at first aizen is wounded and confused at how the world works, but after a brief explaination, Aizen understands how it works and adapts, easily slashing Shinji. Shinji then watched in horror as Aizen causes Tousen to explode.
Aizen later fights Aizen with the other shinigami but is quickly fooled by his illusions, attacking Hinamori, he is then soon cut down.
Zanpakutō
Shikai - The command to release his shikai is "Collapse" The katana then changed form to a sword with a large ring at the bottom of the hilt, Shinji puts his hand inside the ring and can freely move the sword without gripping anything. The blade has holes within.
Special Ability - On release, Sakande gives of a scent, once smelled by the enemy they go under the effect of the special ability. The ability takes the victim to the Inverted World, a world where an illusion makes everything inverted, directions, eye sight, everything. Shinji stated that even the smartest and even someone used to it would be impossible to fight in this world as even they will fight by reflex, sucuming to the effects of the special ability, though Aizen managed to adapt quickly.
