The main Protagonist in the manga "Drifters". Uses a long sword(Nodachi) and a short sword (Wakizashi) in battle.
Shimazu Toyohisa is the main protagonist of Drifters. He was fatally injured when he first arrived into the world and was help by two young slave elves. The brought him to the Castle in Ruin were Oda Nobunaga and Nasu no Yoichi tended to his wounds. He was at first hostile of his new environments but after talking to the two began to settle down. He was also the first Drifter to willingly help the slave elves from being massacred by killing the local governor and his troops. Seeing his impressive military skills and leadership Nobunaga decided to make Toyohisa the head(proxy leader) of their conquest to take over the country.
A running joke in the manga is that Toyohisa is often obsessed with beheading his enemies with him believing that collecting their heads brings him more honor as a warrior. Because of this obsession he often aims directly for his enemies heads with his long sword and will purposely seek out the enemies general or leader to collect their heads and destroy the moral of the troops. The only times he refuses to take their heads is when he believes they are not worth it or if they have done something evil or dishonorable in front of him, such as killing unarmed slaves.
He has been shown to use the rifle at his waist once in chapter one but this was only because he wasn't capable of using his swords. In one chapter it is revealed that Toyohisa created a council for the elven people with their elders as the heads. This act confused and infuriated Nobunaga as he stated that Toyohisa could have been a king if he wanted to. Surprisingly Toyohisa agreed with Nobunaga's statement saying all three of them could have ruled over the elves has kings but it would be inevitable that they would eventually betray the three samurai in an attempt at total independence. He goes on to tell that the main reason Nobunaga faced so many betrayals is that although he can read the minds of people and enemies, he is unable to read what is in their hearts. At first it seemed that Nobunaga took Toyohisa's words at heart but unbeknown to him or Yoichi, Nobunaga is secretly still planning on making Toyohisa a king one way or another. Then they were under attack by the Offscourings by sending Joan of arc and Gillies de Rais
So far Toyohisa has shown to be the most honorable warrior out of all the Drifters to the point were Nobunaga and others believe him to either naive or simple minded. However later chapter prove them wrong as, in battle, Toyohisa will taunt and belittle his enemies while show little too absolutely no mercy. It has also been stated by many characters who know of Toyohisa and seen him in action that his mental state when it involves battle is not right. Nobunaga in particular has mentioned many times that Toyohisa's entire clan is insane and that his family is a prime example thanks to the lessons on war they taught him. Indecently, Olmine has commented that even though she was told that most warriors in Toyohisa's era were considered crazy to a more or less extent, Toyohisa seems willing to sacrifice his own health and life in the pursuit of obtaining the honor of taking his enemies head. This suicidal tendency, as she said, is just like the mind set of an Ends.
During his fight with Joan of arc that, upon discovering Joan actually is a woman, Toyohisa refused to kill her as he stated that there is no honor in slaying a woman, and instead knocked her out with a head-butt. It is later revealed that Toyohisa absolutely refuses to kill women no matter the situation as it is a part of his warriors code that he strictly follows. After he is scolded for leaving an Ends alive instead of killing her by, Abe no Seimei, Toyohisa goes on to declare that despite the Ends trying to kill them that he and the Drifters are still humans and he will not become a pawn in anybodies conflict. Surprisingly it is reading Toyohisa's words that causes Murasaki to genuinely smile for the first time since the series began.
A short OVA that featured in the final Volume of the Hellsing OVA series and promos the Drifters Hirano's latest work.
