This is my first review, I want this anime to be known so that is why.
Anyway, to start. I've always been fascinated by the vampire genre. Especially when I was young. I'd read about vampires that
Creepy little girl Sunako
would haunt people at night, being scary and all. However these past few years vampires have grown softer and softer. This is not really a bad thing, I really enjoy all the TV shows and movies that feature "nice" vampires (except for *cough* Twilight*cough*). But when I watched Shiki I finally remembered what vampires used to be like. Frickin' scary!!
This was such a breath of fresh air to me. These vampires have been neglected way too long.
Anyway, Shiki starts out as a mystery. We have our main heroine called Megumi Shimizu who lives in a boring little village called Sotoba. A new family has moved in to the out-of-place castly on the hills of Sotoba called Kanemasa. Megumi is excited and curious and takes a look. Later that night, Megumi hasn't returned home and a search party starts looking for her and discovers her body in the woods. She's

still alive but she has anemia. The doctor examines her and assures her parents that her case isn't anything serious. However, Megumi died some days afterward, shocking the doctor. And she isn't the only one. More and more people die of this new mysterious illness. Is it an epidemic? Or...
Shiki starts of a bit slow. We get introduced to the many people living in the village. The main characters are Toshio Ozaki, the doctor of the village, Seishin Muroi, the local priest and Natsuno Yuuki, the boy on which Megumi had a big crush.
All in all, it's a really great anime and the build-up of the first few episodes really pays of. I'm on the edge of my seat at the end of every episode. And later on the characters face some moral dilemma's. Can't say too much about that yet as that would be spoiling. This show also really isn't shy in killing of main characters. So don't get too attached ;) This show also features some of the most bizarre hairstyles you'll ever see. But you see right passed those as the episodes continue. Oh yeah, GACKT debuts as a seiyuu!
Be polite about my grammar, English is not my first language.
