Sherlock Hound

The great detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend Dr. John Watson are in constant demand in Edwardian London to foil the evil schemes of Professor Moriarty, who is constantly out to steal some exotic treasure or cause havoc with his minions, Todd and Smiley. In this charming adventure series for children, they are transformed into anthropomorphic dogs (see also Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds). Their adventures are full of charm, wit, and energy as they search for a missing train, track three mysterious lobsters, and defeat a "monster" in the Thames that is more than it seems. Adapted by Montana Jones-creator Marco Pagot from the original novels by Arthur Conan Doyle, this was Pagot's first work with Ghibli's giants. The series was very popular on TV in the U.K. and is still available on video in the U.S. The episodes Blue Carbuncle (#5) and Sunken Treasure (#9) were combined to make a 1984 theatrical release shown on a double bill with Miyazaki's Nausicaä. A further two, The Kidnapping of Mrs. Hudson (#4) and Air War Over the Cliffs of Dover (#10), were combined to create a 1986 "movie" shown on a double bill with Castle in the Sky. A more realistic Sherlock Holmes would get on the trail of a French master thief: see Lupin the Masterthief and the Enigma of 813. The first episode also exists in an alternate dub made by TMS for promotional purposes, which showcases more realistic British accents and renames Todd and Smiley as Nigel and Bruce.
