Shanks Le Roux is the captain of the Red-Haired pirates, and one of the members of the Four Emperors. The man who inspired Luffy to be a pirate.
Shanks is a young and powerful member of the cast of characters in the manga and anime series One Piece. Seen as the man who inspired Monkey D. Luffy to follow his dream to become the King of the Pirates. He gave Luffy his treasured straw hat as a promise between them that he would one say become a great pirate and return it to him.
Shanks is easily recognized by his red hair and three marked scar over his left eye. A mark that was given to him as a young pirate by Blackbeard. He also lost his left arm to a sea monster when saving the life of young Luffy from drowning.
Shanks has a rather bohemian appearance for a captain of a whole pirate crew. Always wearing a white unbuttoned and untucked shirt, long patterned shorts, sandals, and a draping black coat over his shoulders.
Shanks primarily fights with a single sword, but is also known to use the ability called Haki. This power can cause people much weaker then he is to pass out in his presence and has been shown to have the ability to cancel out any of the Devil Fruit powers. Besides this, Shanks has shown to have no super powers.
His power and influence as a pirate is known world wide as a member of the Four Pirate Emperors. These are four of the most powerful pirates in the world, but 23 years ago he was just an apprentice pirate on the crew of Gold Roger.
Shanks found Buggy hiding in a long boat and due to an accident caused Buggy to swallow the real Devil Fruit this time. It was this event that would cause Buggy to blame Shanks for ruining his life.
As a part of the crew, Shanks followed the adventures that led Roger to become to King of the Pirates. From clashes with the Whitebeard Pirates, in which eventually led Shanks to be scarred in the face by the pirate Blackbeard; battles with Golden Lion, Shiki; and countless brawls with many other pirates and Marines.
Some time after the crew had conquered the Grand Line., Roger called for the crew to be quietly disbanded. One by one each member left. It's unknown how long Shanks stayed.
Shanks one one of many others that witnessed the execution of Gold Roger in his home town, Loguetown. This was a moment of great sorrow for Shanks and weep to see his captain die, but it was his last words that started the Great Pirate Era.
Buggy had also been in Loguetown to witness the execution and Shanks asked Buggy to join the pirate crew he was starting. Buggy refused since he wanted to start his own.
Shanks sailed out and gathered many to his Red-Haired Pirate crew. They include his first mate, Ben Beckman; Lucky Roux, and Yasopp. This crew sailed the Grand Line and at some point Shanks became a member of the Four Emperor Pirates.
During the voyage the crew came across a Devil Fruit that they would later discover was the Gum-Gum Fruit when the crew sailed into the Fuschia Village, in the Goa Kingdom. They would spend a year using the town as port and it would be here that Shanks would meet a young boy that would shape the dreams of Shanks future.
A short while before the storyline he met Portgas D. Ace, who thanked him for saving his little brother. Shanks responded by throwing a party to celebrate, as he didn't know Luffy had a brother.
Meet the Rubber Boy
Shank's crew spent quite a bit of time in the quiet Fuschia Village where they met a small boy named Luffy. They also spent a lot of time in Makino's bar. Luffy wanted to be a pirate and kept pleading to join Shank's crew. He even witnessed as he tried to prove his own bravery by scaring his own face.
Shanks took a lot of join in teasing the young boy. Offering him milk and telling him that no pirate would drink milk. It was in this bar on that very day that some bandits from the mountain came in, led by Higuma. They came looking for liquor, but Shank's crew had drank most of it. Shanks apologized to Higuma and offered him the last bottle. The offer was refused and the bandit broke the bottle getting liquor all over Shanks.
Shanks knelt down to clean up the mess and Higuma knocked shanks down and broke even more bottles, drenching Shanks. The bandits mocked the pirate captain and left. Once gone the crew and Shanks started laughing.
It was Luffy who was devastated that Shanks refused to fight back. Shanks explained to Luffy that there is no reason to get angry over something as small as pouring liquor over you. That killing doesn't make you a man.
Luffy was too young to understand and tried to walk off. It was to everyone's horror that in the commotion. Luffy had eaten the Devil Fruit they got from the Grand Line as his dessert. Shanks had to tell Luffy what he had done and would never be able to swim for the rest of his life.
Some days later, Higuma returned to the bar and took Luffy hostage when he defended Shanks to the bandit. He was threatening to kill Luffy. Shanks had just come to port and was surprised to see no one there to greet them. He came across the fight and arrived just in time.
One of Higuma's men attempted to ambush Shanks with a pistol. Shanks tried to warn the bandit that pointing a pistol at him was dangerous. Lucky Roux was faster and killed the bandit with a shot to the head first without a single word.
The bandits were shocked to see how violent these pirates were now acting. Shanks explained that it was one thing to mock and throw food on him, but no one can hurt his friends.
Higuma laughed at those words and ordered his men to attack. They were quickly defeated by Ben Beckman alone. Higuma tried to talk his way out of a fight after that, but when that didn't work he used a smoke bomb to grab Luffy and run. Shanks panicked since they didn't know where to look.
Shanks was able to find Luffy just in time to save his life. Huiguma that taken Luffy out to the sea in a small boat and tossed him in the water, but Higuma was eaten and killed by the Sea King monster that lived in the bay of the village. Shanks dove into the water just in time to save Luffy from the same fate, but these actions caused shanks to lose his own left arm to the beast as a price.
The monster tried to come around once more, but it's eyes met the furious glare of Shanks and was intimidated enough to run away.
Luffy cried in Shanks' chest as he kept them afloat. Luffy was heart broken, because he knew Shanks had sacrificed his own arm to save him. Still, Shanks didn't seem to care. He was just happy that Luffy was safe. He told him that Makino told him how Luffy had stood up to Higuma for him and was honored. It was then that Luffy understood how dangerous the life of a pirate could be. He stopped asking to join Shank's crew.
Soon after this event, Shanks' crew packed up to leave for good this time. They had stayed in the quiet town long enough and were heading back for the Grand Line. Shanks was sure to tease Luffy still when the boy said he was going to become a pirate on his own, but this just caused Luffy to shout at Shanks saying,
Luffy's words invoked memories for Shanks. These were the words he had heard from his former captain Gol Roger. Shanks took his treasured straw hat, and placed it on the young boys head. He told Luffy that the hat was his treasure and to look after it. To be sure to return it one day after Luffy had become a great pirate.
It was 10 years after the execution of his captain that in his travels that he came across his former commander of the Roger Pirates, Silvers Rayleigh, on Sabaody Archipelago. The missing straw hat and left arm drew Rayleigh's attention. When he asked about it. Shanks told him about how he had met a young boy in a village in the East Blue that had used the very same words Gol Roger had used once before.
Shanks would not hear of Luffy again until after he had defeated and earned his first wanted poster and bounty after his defeat over the pirate Arlong. News that came to him from the Shichibukai, Mihawk. Shanks was overjoyed to see Luffy's face again and that he was following their promise. He even had a celebration.
Some time later Shanks, himself, appeared before Whitebeard. Many of the lesser pirates passed out before his presence.
He brought sake from his home village to share with Whitebeard, but he came with a warning. It was to call Portgas D. Ace back form his mission to hunt down Blackbeard. He feared what could happen if the two finally met, but Whitebeard refused. Explaining that Blackbeard murdered a fellow crew mate. the most unforgivable crime aboard a pirate ship. Both drew their swords and clash. the force was so great that the dark clouds above split in two. It is revealed that Shanks got the wound on his eye from a battle with Blackbeard. Whitebeard tells Shanks that it is too late for him to order him around. The outcome of this fight was never shown. Both parties are later seen to be unharmed.
Whitebeard War
Before the war had begun and Whitebeard as on the move. One of the other Four Emperors, Kaido, attempted to attack Whitebeard. Shanks's crew cut him off to allow Whitebeard to move on Marineford.
Shanks was the force that stopped the war between Marines and the Whitebeard Pirates after Ace and Whitebeard had fallen. Admirals, such as Akainu, were still intent on slaughtering as many pirates as they could, but just as many if not more Marine soldiers were suffering. The lone soldier Coby pleaded for the fighting to stop, but Akainu only turned on him. Shanks appeared just in time to save Coby.
On the battlefield he found his treasured straw hat. Luffy had lost in in the heat of the war, but became catatonic after witnessing his brother Ace being murdered before him. he was currently being brought to Trafalgar Law for medical treatment by Buggy. They were also being pursued by Admiral Kizaru. Shanks offered Buggy a treasure map if he would give Luffy the hat back. Lucky Roux asked Shanks if he was alright with not seeing Luffy after so long, but Shanks only said that if he saw him now. It would be breaking their promise. The part about a treasure map to Buggy actually turned out to just be a trick to get Buggy's cooperation. A fact that didn't set well with his former crew mate.
He then looked to the Whitebeard commander Marco to take the remaining crew and injured to leave the battle.
Once Luffy was away. Shanks gave an ultimatum to Sengoku, the Marine commander. End the fighting now, or Shanks and his crew would join the battle. Sengoku relented and called off the fighting. Shanks also told him that he would be taking the bodies of Whitebeard and Ace for proper burial. There was some protest among the Marines, but Sengoku also agreed to this term. The public broadcast of the deaths was enough.
Shanks has not been seen nor heard from since.
The Power of The Emperor
Shanks is a member of the Four Emperors, and losing an arm didn't weaken him in any way. He has fought Mihawk on equal grounds many times, and survived multiple encounters with Whitebeard. He is such a great commander and international power that he assisted in bringing an end to the Whitebeard war against the Marines with the threat he posed.
Shanks is also a known user of a power called Haki.
Shanks was noted for this when he saved Luffy from a sea king with a single mean look.
He has been also said to use the 3rd form of Haki called
Haōshoku Haki. Later while boarding the ship of the White beard pirates Shanks was able to use the third form of haki to begin harming the crew and the ship.
Shanks also has power in his sword alone. He is said to have legendary sword fighting strategy. Especially since Shanks is rivaled with Mihawk. This means Shanks is a excellent swordsmen and will cause problems for Zoro
The straw hat was not a gift to Luffy, but a promise between them. He gave it to Luffy, because he saw in the boy the same fire and passion as his former captain and true Pirate King.
It was this hat that became a symbol of both Luffy and his crew. Luffy also protects it fiercely. To him. It's his greatest treasure.
