On his way home from school one day, Yuji Sakai's world freezes and a young girl wielding a large sword who informs him that he's actually already dead, but still existing in the world-- oddly enough. The girl sticks around to see what happens, and he names her after her sword: Shana.


This Franchise based off of the light Novel novel series written by Yashichiro Takahashi and illustrated by Noizi Ito. There where two Manga adaptions the first illustrated by Ayato Sasakura in 2005 and the second illustrated by Shii Kiya in 2007. Written by Yasuko Kobayashi and directed by Takashi Watanabe the series was also adapted into three anime the first in 2006, the second between 2007 and 2008, and the third between 2011 and 2012, two OVA's and an anime film the first released in December of 2006 the second released between October 2009 and September 2010 and a film in April 2007. A PlayStation 2 video game was released in March 2006, and released on Nintendo DS in March 2007.


Living his uneventful life Yuji Sakai never could have known what he would find out the day the "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" showed up telling him everything he had known was all gone and he could disapear at any moment. Vowing to live each moment he had left while trying to survive those who want what he holds inside him. The story follows Yuji and Shana as they fight against the Denizens trying to survive and save as many as they can before Yuji's time runs out.

Yuji Sakai (坂井 悠二)

Yuji Sakai thought his life was normal until the day he meets a girl with red hair who tells him that his life was over long before that day. He is a flame one that is temporary and one that will burn out. But Yuji also learns he is a Mystes who contains a treasure known as the "Midnight Lost Child" that restores his Power of Existence each night.
Shana (シャナ) / "Flame-Haired Blazing-Eyed Hunter" (「炎髪灼眼の討ち手」) (Flame Haze)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya Tabitha St. Germain (Season 1), Cherami Leigh (Seasons 2-3, film, OVAs)
Known only as "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" until she was given the name Shana by Yuji after the name of her sword. She was once human but after a contract with the Crimson Lord became a Flame Haze and will live forever. She at first thinks of Yuji as nothing but trash little bits left behind of the person who once was but gradually warms to him going so far as to love him.
Alastor (アラストール) / "Flame of the Heavens" (「天壌の劫火」) (Lord of the Crimson Realm)

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara Paul Dobson (Season 1), Kent Williams (Seasons 2-3, film, OVAs)

Alastor the Crimson Lord that Shana made her contract with and is now bound to communicates through a divine vessel called Cocytus which for Shana is a pendant she wears around her neck. He is extremely powerful and does what he can to keep Denizens from eating peoples Power of Existence.


"The Snake of the Festival" (「祭礼の蛇」銀二番目) (Crimson Lord)
Voiced by: Shō Hayami
The Snake of the Festival is a powerful Lord of Crimson Realm who leads the Crimson Denizen organization Bal Masqué and is contracted to his one-time contractor Yuji Sakai.

Light Novel

Shakugan no Shana (November 2002 - November 2012)

This Light Novel series was written by Yashichiro Takahashi, with illustrations by Noizi Ito. There where 26 volumes published between November 9, 2002 and November 10, 2012 under the Dengeki Bunko imprint. All but four of these follow the same story while the remaining four are side stories. The first English edition of Volume one,licensed by Viz, was distributed in North America on April 17,2007 with the second Volume following on October 16, 2007. Although Viz published no further volumes the novels are also licensed in South Korea Hong Kong and Taiwan.


Shakugan no Shana (April 2005 - October 2011)

= The first Manga adaption by the same name as the light novel, illustrated by Ayato Sasakura, was serialized in the manga magazine Dengeki Daioh between April 2005 and October 2011. On October 27, 2005 the chapters where published in ten Tankobon volumes. Between April 17, 2007 and September 21, 2010 Viz Media Licensed the manga for English distribution in North America.

Shakugan no Shana X Eternal song: Harukanaru Uta (September 2007 - September 2012)

The second Manga adaption called Shakugan no Shana X Eternal song: Harukanaru Uta, illustrated by Shii Kiya are based off of the tenth novel in the series began its serialization in the manga magazine Dengeki Black Maoh on September 19, 2007. In 2009 and September 2012 it ran in Dengieki Mach.


Shakugan no Shana (October 2005March 2007)

Shakugan no Shana is based on Noizi Ito's original designs and written by Yasuko Kobayashi a 24- episode anime series began airing in Japan in October 6, 2005 and ran until March 23, 2007 on TV Kanagawa. From January to August 2006 8 DVD volumes where released.

Shakugan no Shana Second (October 2007March 2008)

The first a 24-episode second season called Shakugan no Shana Second which aired between October 5, 2007 and March 28, 2008 on MBS and later released on a eight DVD set from January to August 2008.


Shakugan no Shana SP (December 2006)

In December 8, 2006 a OVA episode titled Shakugan no Shana SP which take place after episode 13 was released.

Shakugan no Shana (April 2007)

Shakugan no Shana was released at the Dengeki Bunko Movie Festival on April 21, 2007 an anime film based on the first novel, worked on by the same staff as the anime, was released.

Shakugan no Shana Final (October 2011 - March 2012)

The four episode OVA series titled Shakugan no Shana Final aired between October 8, 2011 and March 24, 2012 on Tokyo MX. Each episode was 24 minutes each. Funimation released A DVD box set in September 2008, and was re-released in September 2009 under Funimation's "Viridian Collection".
