Some things just have to be obscure to be great, you think Donnie Dark would've been half as good if it's plot was perfefecly clear? Speaking of Donnie Darko, Serial Experiment lain is a lot like donnie darko, minus the six foot talking rabbit.
as i said before, the plot is kinda of obscure, so i'll go over the basics, one day Lian and a group of her friends get a message from a friend of there's of there's who commited suicide a week ago. Most of the girls who got the message ignored it like some prank in bad taste, But lain decides to try an communicate with the supposed spirit of the friend. The friend claims that she is now in the wired, the anime's form of the internet. When she starts to investigate she begins to uncover a massive conspiracy that some how revolves around her, and could potentially destroy reality.
To get the whole plot, you will have to think, and maybe even watch the series twice, but you will enjoy ever minute of it, the art and sound track helps gives the anime a creepy atomsphere witch helps when the anime starts getting into more occult super natural stuff, my only real complaint about this excalent anime is the narrative scenes in witch it will dryly discuss some conspiracy theories serounding the creation of the internet, the best way i could describe these would be like the narrative scenes in Metal Gear, but not as interesting.
Just about every thing
occasional boring narrative scene
