On his deathbed, Fleet Commander Fairlock entrusts Ridget with Gargantia. Meanwhile, Chamber finally gets a fix on the location of the Galactic Alliance, but they're so far away that Ledo will never be able to get home. As preparations are underway for Fairlock's funeral, Shipmaster Flange announces that he's leaving Gargantia. Ridget struggles to keep other Shipmasters from following suit. Pinion has plans of pillaging the ocean floor, so he joins the like-minded Flange. Amy is sad when two people she cares about are leaving as well, Melty and Ledo...
Ridget and the others wait by Ferrock's side. Ferrock hands over a golden key to Ridget and tells her to take care of the fleet. Seconds later, Ferrock dies quietly. Chamber calculates and finds coordinates from the Galactic Alliance. He states that the first SOS signal sent will reach the Galactic Alliance in 6,582 years. Chamber says reaching the main force is impossible. The next day, everyone mourns the death of Ferrock while the ship masters wonder if they should go with Flange due to Ridget's inexperience. When Ridget wants to talk to them, the shipmasters tell her that to attend Ferrock's funeral. Ledo informs Pinion that he cannot go back home. Pinion tells Ledo that he has found a nest of whale squids. In a meeting, Flange explains that finding the legacy that Pinion talks about can potentially support his people, and he has a duty to protect the citizens on his ship. In the market, Amy and Saaya asks Melty if she was really leaving them. Saaya replies that she has to take care of her grandpa. In Ferrock's funeral, the people pour sand into Ferrock's boat. Flange tells Crown that he wanted him to be the next Fleet Commander. However, Crown replies that he has to guide the next generation. Flange says his last words to Ferrock and pours sand on Ferrock's hands. Ridget glances at Chevron's photo that has young Ridget, Ferrock, and Oldham in it. Pinion asks Ridget to sign his departing ship permission and tells her that she has no business protecting people without having confidence in herself.
That night, Saaya finds Amy looking at Ledo from afar. She tells Amy to go with Melty if she is worried about Ledo. Amy replies that she cannot leave Bevel and Dr. Oldham. Saaya is happy since she won't be alone. In Ridget's cabin, Bellows pays a visit and shares how she had a similar situation when she took on everything herself. Bellows tells Ridget that she has people to rely on. In Amy's home, Amy cries about Ledo after Bevel mentions Ledo is leaving. Meanwhile, Ridget notices people are coming in to live on Gargantia's fleet and recalls how Ferrock allowed Ledo to live on his ship. Bevel visits Ledo and asks him why is he leaving. Ledo gives Bevel a flute and states that his little brother made it. He explains the whale squid is the Hideauze, and he is here to exterminate them to protect Amy and the others. Ridget rushes to the funeral and apologizes for being late. She scoops some sand and pour it on Ferrock. The men send Ferrock's ship down into the sea. Ridget shares that she wants to protect the Gargantia Fleet and admits she does not have strength to stop people from leaving the fleet. She asks everyone to help her. Before Bellows could say something, the others voice their support for Ridget. Before Ledo leaves, he pays one last visit to Amy and Bevel.
