Hello and welcome to Homoerotic or What? .... I mean... Weird or What?! This time we're straying from our good friend Zetsubou Sensei and we're going to check out Sengoku Basara: Butch Homo Samurai Kings. Okay... that's a little bit cruel now, but I still really need to get that out. The real title is Sengoku Basara: Samurai Knights. Yes. They just chose the two manliest professions (other than lumber jack) and mixed them up with the Japanese word for "country in civil war", and some nonsense syllables. I think the title explains Basara pretty well. Manly men fighting each other and a tonne of pure nonsense. I'm not really sure if Basara is being serious or not. Heck I'm not sure if it's supposed to be fantasy or not. But I don't really know if anybody does. But, before I talk about how ridiculous and nonsensical Basara is, I'm going to tell you what's good...
 It looks cool now....
 It looks cool now....

And that would be the animation. Hawt damn that animation is delicious. It's very smooth with great colours and a good frame rate. Slick and nice, and holds up to animation two years later. So, yes. Kudos to Production IG. Pretty much most of IG's work is really nice. Especially their works like Ghost Hound, Ghost in The Shell, and Eden of the East. Since Basara is in fact based off of a game, they have stunning character designs. All the best character designs come from video games, yet some of the worst adaptations. Well, actually most of the characters are super awesome. I guess they just had to have Mrs. Cleavage with some serious hair problems, but other than that Basara is a marvel to look at. It also had a catchy opening!

But that's pretty much all the praise I can give this series. I mean, hell yeah it's entertaining, but hell no it is not good. Let's talk about the story. Wait... never mind. For the life of me I can't find a substantial plot. Samurai fight each other and try to dominate a country... I think. It wasn't really clear. I probably shouldn't be so hard on the plot there. I mean it is an action anime so you shouldn't expect too much. The fight scenes are amazing, so I guess that makes it manly enough and an awesome shounen series.

Hahahaha... Nope. The writing is crap. Tonnes of random Engrish and everything was just so over the top. Horses with handle bars, exploding sword fights, and a guy that wields not one, not two... SIX swords at the same time. This thing is blowing my mind in a bad way. Maybe the silliness was intended. Perhaps Basara is a comedy? But yet again I think they're being serious... or trolling.

I also cant get over the bromance. The bromance is everything but platonic. I mean, Yukimura falling on the ground after a fight with Masamune grabbing his chest and exclaiming "My heart burns!" and his constant obsession with Masamune is homoerotic and nobody can deny it. Plus that little Rock Lee-Gai Sensei moment with Yukimura and that guy with the fluffy red helmet was just a bit too bromantic. I watched this in anime club, and the entire fujoshi population burst out in fangirling laughter. Sure, fujoshi slash everything, but when the straight guys start growing awkward... you know things have gotten a bit too Brokeback Mountain. I think Basara was intended to be the manliest anime ever but one of the script writers was a serious fujoshi troll.

Well, I'm enjoying myself. And I find this sure as hell a comedy, and the animation is drool worthy. So, I'll watch it.
Funimation has it up on Youtube right here.. Just for you!

In between watching Japanese versions of cartoon theme songs, having probably one of the poppiest songs outside of the Macross Frontier soundtrack running in a mental loop, and watching cartoon and movie intros from when I was a kid, I decided to blog about the anime I purchased last month.  In chronological order...

Time of Eve OVA (BD)

ToE is one of my favorites and when I saw that it was getting a BD release that actually had English subtitles, a rarity for Japanese releases, I jumped on it.  There's a surprising amount of English on the packaging, considering that the show hasn't been licensed or scheduled for release yet.  It also came with no less than 8 different covers that made the cardboard case bulge like it was about to bust.  I believe this is still available for free on Crunchyroll if anyone wants to check it out.

Katanagatari vol 10 (BD)

A really hq series with an interesting story and characters and some top notch animation.  This and the remaining two volumes are some of my favorite episodes of the series.  Every volume comes with something that I assume is a Kabuto card, an audio CD with the voice actors, the 4 panel flyer you see and a perhaps the hardest and shiniest cardboard case in the world.

School Days vol 2 & 3 (DVD)

I could go on forever about School Days but I'll just say that I'm halfway through the series now.  As far as bonuses go, I like the ones that come with this series the most.  It's similar to Katanagatari in terms of bonus items but the booklet is about 10 pages long with interviews that I can't read >_< and sketches galore.  If I had a scanner I'd post pics of it, but I don't so I can't.

Sengoku Basara (BD) & Dragonball Kai vol 3 (BD)

I wasn't planning on buying these two this month but they were on sale so I picked them up.  Sadly, Amazon.com continued its longstanding tradition of sending me anime in busted up paper sleeves with these two.  I returned them and they sent me two more in even worse condition so I decided to quite while I was ahead.  The bonus items fell in line with what I typically get from American anime releases anime releases such as commercials/flyers for other shows with them being too classy to included something as petty as a booklet or single-sided flyer for the actual series being purchased, a wonderful survey that you have to pay postage for if you want to submit it, and a luxurious paper collector's sleeve that's thinner than a greeting card.

Collection So Far

My mother is still borrowing Shigofumi so it's not included, but this is everything else.

Next Month

I'm pretty excited for next month since it starts it's the point that I decided to start collecting Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and I'll get one of my favorite episodes; Les Diaboliques.  Aside from that I'll be grabbing Katanagatari vol 11, the next two volumes of School Days and hopefully they'll be a sale on Naruto Shippuden or Bleach Boxes at the time.  I'm starting to fall super far behind on my Bleach collection so hopefully there will be some non-Bount boxes on sale.

Edit Actually, the US releases I plan on picking up will be Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs along with Cat Shit One on blu-ray.

In a conclusion that will only make sense to me, I'll leave you all with a movie intro that side tracked me for about 20 minutes, along with watching 80s cartoon themes over and over, while making this post.  Ahh, the memories of being a 5th grader sitting in a pitch black movie theater with a bunch of other little kids who are about to explode with excitement for the movie to start.  Easily one of my favorite ways of revealing the movie company logo.

i feel its going to be an amazing game, far better than any dw or sw game to ever grace game systems. the graphics for one. are out of this world, and the combat has become an art of its own, evolving into a truly beautiful montage of action, i for one am pre-ordering this game at full price a good two months ahead of time to make sure i get what i believe to be one of the best games i have ever seen.
