Causing painful harm to oneself for whatever reason.
This is when someone deliberately harms their own body. The most common reason is to cope with one's emotional feelings and to feel "alive". Most self-mutilators don't even feel any intense pain and don't intend to kill themselves. If untreated, this can lead to unintentional suicide, an infection or in most cases, permenant marks on the body.
Self-injury can also be linked to some other mental illnesses such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, hallucinization, or Insanity. Most of these can be treated as well.
Some people, especially in movies and anime either break or cut off one or more limbs to escape from chains connected to walls or other forms of submission. Said decision can be a lifelong disadvantage because it can also lead to chronic blood loss and laceration. For example, in Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne, Rin had to break her own hand to break out of a tied rope to free it. She's immortal and can fully heal any broken or severed limb, so she was able to cut the rest of the ropes that bound her.
Some have to cut themselves and place their blood on a weapon to enhance its powers. Saya Otanashi is noted to do this along with some others.
