Helpful 10-year-old Akko usually takes good care of her belongings, especially her old mirror, brought back as a pres-ent from India by her father. She polishes it carefully every night before she goes to bed, but one night she accidentally breaks it. Very sad, she buries the pieces in the garden. That night, the spirit of the mirror wakes her and gives her another mirror to thank her for cherishing the old one. Her new pres-ent is a compact with the power to transform the owner into any person or animal she chooses if she says a magical word; but the fairy warns Akko that she must keep the spell, and the powers of the mirror, a secret. Akko uses her new powers to solve the problems of friends and neighbors in her quiet hometown, and, as her confidence grows, she transforms into animal shapes and even goes to other countries. Based on the 1962 manga series by Fujio Akatsuka, who also created Osomatsu-kun and Genius Idiot Ba-kabon, SA was the next "magical girl" series after Little Witch Sally and confirmed the appeal of the formula. The series was remade for Fuji TV in 1988, with Hiroki Shibata as director and new character designs from Yoshinori Kanemori. Shibata returned for a third 28-episode TV season on TV Asahi in 1998, with character designs from Toshio Deguchi.
