Set in the future Tokyo suffers a huge earthquake that splits a piece of the land into a new continent. The continent is called the Lost Ground, and resides there people who are able to summon alters.
Scryed is a Shonen-based Anime series created by Gorō Taniguchi, who was famous for G-Gundam, Gundam Wing, and Gao Gai Gar and would later go on to direct Code Geass. The 26 episode series takes place after "The Great Uprising" which cause the Kanagawa Prefecture to become separated from the rest of Tokyo and the area was renamed "The Lost Ground". Along with this, among people born on "The Lost Ground" 1% of them have the ability to break down and reshape matter using their thoughts and willpower. This ability was named Alter and the people capable of using it were Alter Users. Those that avoid the government and live outside of the central city in "The Lost Ground" are the Native Alters, who are seen as dangerous and evil by those in the central city. HOLD, an organization backed by the Mainland Government established HOLY, a special policing force consisting of only Alter Users, to protect the citizens and arrest any Native Alters that they find.
The series follows Kazuma, a Native Alter and mercenary. His friend, Kunihiko Kimishima, finds 'jobs' for him that require his abilities so he can make enough money for himself and Kanami Yuta, the little girl that lives with him and also knows nothing of his Alter abilities or the 'jobs' he takes from Kimishima. After one such job, he's attacked and beaten by Ryuhou who is a powerful Alter user in HOLY and a rivalry starts between them that lasts throughout the series. After escaping HOLY and returning to "The Lost Ground", he decides to fight against HOLY and HOLD to keep "The Lost Ground" from being taken over by the Mainland Government and keeping them from using the Native Alters as experiments.
