Lt Commander Scott Bernard was leader of the 21st Mars Division. Born in space he had never set eyes on the planet Earth until he was ordered to help reclaim it from the Invid.
Born in outer space, Scott Bernard and his girlfriend Marlene Rush are part of the Robotech Expeditionary Force, Mars Division, sent to reclaim the Earth from the Invid. Scott proposes to Marlene before their descent into Earth orbit but she does not give him a response (or so he believes). Scott and his squadron fight off the defending Invid are only successful in fighting off the first wave. The ship tries to enter the atmosphere too quickly and it begins breaking apart. Before Scott can do anything another wave of defending Invid armored scouts attack the ship and Scott is forces to watch it, and Marlene, go up in flames. Scott survives his own landing on Earth and using the armored Cyclone that is stored in his heavily damaged Alpha Fighter he begins his journey to Reflex Point, the home base of the Invid Regis. Prior to his journey Scott watches a holo-locket that Marlene gave to him stating that she would marry him. Closing the locket Scott begins his journey.
On his trek he finds several allies, Rand, Rook Bartley, Lance "Lancer" Belmont, Jim "Lunk" Austin, Annie "Mint" Labelle and the amnesic woman he dubs Marlene. Marlene is actually the crown princess of the Invid. She has been transformed into a human to act as a spy, but the process works a bit too well and she forgets that she is an humanoid Invid and spy. During the journey to Reflex point she and Scott fall in love, a relationship that comes to a halt when her identity is revealed on the eve of the final battle.
Despite their conflicting feeling about the situation Marlene accepts her fate and powers that are afforded her as a crown princess and is able to convince the Regis not only to abandon Earth and the fight, but to save the Earth from its imminent destruction. During the Regis' preparations to depart Earth, Corg (Crown Prince) threatens to annihilate all of the humans on the battlefield. Scott faces him twice (losing the initial encounter and his Alpha fighter) only to return in the Beta fighter and eliminate Corg's threat with a volley of missiles.
The Regis collects all of the protoculture on Earth, and all of her children (save Ariel and Sera) and departs for another world.
Scott leaves Earth, and Ariel, to go look for Admiral Hunter and the missing SDF-3. Enroute to the Moonbase he witnesses an attack by an unknown alien race on an expeditionary force ship. Scott destroys the attackers and a short time later is reunited with Marcus Rush, Marlene's younger brother.
