Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
A suicical teacher is in charge of a class of diverse students who change his life.
Itoshiki Nozomu is a teacher in a Japanese High School. The series revolves around the interaction between him and his often unique and crazy pupils, which leads to hilarious and awkward results. His name translates to "Mr Despair"
Fuura is the first student that Mr Despair meets on his first day to school. She is seen as the eternal optimist throughout the show, and is seemingly always at Mr Despairs side when he meets a new student. She gives off the aura of a very happy and well rounded character, and is often seen as the most "Sensible" character in the class, even if she's quite strange.
Nami Hitou:
Nami is a normal student. She is usually seen trying to break out, and become a more wild, outrageous character, but she is just often seen as "Normal". Her class is friendly with her, but she doesn't have any wild perks or specific associations with her, like the rest of the class.
Chiri Kitsu:
Chiri is the first member of the class who is introduced as being insane. While every character in the show has some kind of flaw, hers comes across as a type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Similar to Death the Kid). According to her, everything must be "Neat and tidy", and exactly as she planned it. If this is not the case, she often shows her more horrific side, which is a militant, sociopathic character. She was one of the students who "Fell" for Itoshiki, after they slept on beds next to each other in the Nurses Office, and took it as a proposal of marriage.
Meru Otonashi
Meru is portrayed as a mute character, although whether or not she can actually speak is still under speculation. She interacts with other people through her cell phone, by sending e-mail. While she initially comes across as a nice, reserved character, she actually has an "Acid Tongue", often insulting anyone who tries to contact her. Especially Mr Despair.
Abiru Kobushi:
Abiru is a girl who is completely obsessed with animals, and more so, their tails. She has somewhat of a fetish towards fluffy animal tails, and she collects them on the wall at her house, akin to a trophy hunter who collects animals heads. She is regularly seen trying to pin animal tails to Mr Despair, or other students in the class. It is thought at the beginning that she is a victim of domestic abuse, which is why she is always covered in bandages, but it later arises that she works at a zoo, and gets her injuries from playing with big animals.
Harumi is a big fan of manga, and regularly draws yaoi inspired comics of her favourite MalexMale couples. She is portrayed as always trying to meet deadlines, which implies she's making somewhat of a career (Despite the fact this may be at a dealers booth at a Comic Fest). She has even drawn comics about her other classmates, in compromising positions.
Kaere is a foreign exchange student from America who has a bipolar personality disorder. On one hand, she comes across as Kaere, the soft, well spoken girl who is enamoured with Japanese culture, and is very polite towards everyone around her. However, she also houses Kaede, the American counterpart, who gets offended very easily, and often tries to sue her classmates and teacher, as she often ends up a result of fanservice (Often in the form of panty shots).
Kiri is initially seen as a Hikkikimori who refuses to leave the house through fear of social interaction. She locks herself in her room, and covers herself in a blanket all the time. After Mr Despair is sent to her house to try and reason with her, he meets Fuura along the way, who convinces him that she is a Zashiki-Warashi, who brings good luck to her house, and that she cannot leave. Mr Despair attempts to get in through her window, and inadvertadly scares her out of her room. After he claims to become a double suicide partner with her, and sees her face, which is beautiful underneath her hair, which usually covers up her face, she also "Falls" for him, and starts coming to school. However, she continues to be a shutin who operates on the school grounds, often in an empty room, although she will appear in other places too.
Matoi is a stalker, who instantly falls in "Deep love" with whoever she chooses. This leads to her copying the persons clothing style, emailing them all the time, phoning them, reading their mail, and generally keeping track of every single thing they do. Fuura says that she is not a "Stalker", only that she is expressing her "Deep love" for whoever she is following. She "Falls" for Itoshki early on, and continues to love him throughout all of the series.
