I just started watching Zetsubou Sensei's first season today and I seen the unusual way that the censorship was applied to fan service scenes. Is this censorship part of the comedy in the series or just a way to sell DVDs of the series uncensored? I've heard of similar tactics done with recent fan service heavy titles like Kodomo no Jikan.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. Could you elaborate?

The first episode of Zetsubou Sensei had a couple scenes that had some bald guy's face covering up "certain" parts of female bodies. The first was when Kafuka was preventing Nozomu from hanging himself and a later scene in the episode when Kafuka imagined the classroom being turned into a spa.

What I am asking is if the self-censorship in those scenes were intentional either for comedy or to promote buying an uncensored DVD verison?

I don't know about the dvd release but I always took his face as a sign for comedic fan service blocking and nothing more. Whenever I see his face, I just giggle.

Indeed, for the comedy.

I thought it was just for comedy, just because he that kind of crazy guy.

Bumping FTW. But I feel I should clear this all up.

That would be Maeda-kun (Kosaku Maeda). He's credited as MAEDAX in the credits. In Zoku he's known as Maedax G.
He's also voicing that laundry guy at the end of the stalker chain in episode two (maeda cleaning it even says on his clothes) and other random characters in other episodes.
He's an assistant to Koji Kumeta (the creator of the zetsubou sensei manga).

There was a vote before the DVD realeases of the first season about if they should leave the censorship parts with him out or not and it ended with them being removed.

Here's his wikipedia page if you can read japanese or want to run google translate on it: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/前田君
