A series consisting of a suicidal teacher and his eccentric students, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a comedy series whose subjects are as varied as the characters themselves. With no underlining plot, each episode and chapter typically stands on its own without much canonical connection to the others whatsoever.

Overview

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a manga and anime series which deals with the antics of high school teacher Nozomu Itoshiki and his eclectic bunch of students. An absurdist comedy at heart, the topics of humor are typically derived from either Nozomu's and his students' idiosyncracies or the quirks of modern Japanese and worldwide society. The series often parodies numerous facets of pop culture in the process. While the normal gamut of poking fun at other anime and manga franchises is present, the limitation doesn't stop there, as other real-life figures and matters are also consistently lampooned. Everything from Lucky Star to nature painter Bob Ross to home cooking shows gets it share in the series.

Plot

On the first day of school, the cheerful and optimistic student Kafuka Fuura accidentally bumps into a man who is attempting to hang himself from a tree. He is at first embarrassed that his suicide attempt seems to have been foiled, but Fuura merely chats with him about his attempt to "make himself taller," something her father also frequently tried. It later turns out that the man is Nozomu Itoshiki, a high school teacher who is taking over Fuura's class of eccentric females (and mostly invisible males).

Anime Season Notes

  • Most of the episode titles are references to a piece of literature. For example, in Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei episode 2, one of its episode segments is called Decorations at Tiffany's which is in reference to Truman Garcia Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's.
  • In Japan, Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was packed with the limited edition manga bundles for volumes 15 and 16.
  • Each episode ends with an art piece by someone who affiliates with Kōji Kumeta (mangaka of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, serialized in Weekly Shounen Magazine)
