Sayoko Uehara is a secondary character from the Shin Megami Tensei series of games and specifically the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 video game for the Playstation 2. It's the sixth game of the franchise and was developed as a murder mystery RPG with deep social aspects. It was developed by ATLUS in Japan, directed by Katsuro Hashino, and character design by Shigenori Soejima. It was released in Japan in July 10, 2008, and in the U.S. on December 9, 2008.

The series was later adapted into a manga written and illustrated by Shuji Sogabe, and began serialization in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Black Maoh magazine on September 19, 2008. The anime adaption began in October of 2011 and is directed by Seiji Kishi.

Her manga first appearance was in Persona 4 "??" , and her first anime appearance was in Persona 4 The Animation - Episode 13 "A Stormy Summer Vacation 1/2". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Natsuko Kuwatani, and the U.S. dub has not been announced.

Major Story Arcs

Sayoko appears in the two-part episode A Stormy Summer Vacation. Her appearance in the first part is limited to a cameo appearance in which the protagonist Yu Narukami's cousin Nanako Dojima sees Yu with her for an unknown reason. In the second part, which covers the same period of time from Yu's perspective, it is revealed that Sayoko initially meets Yu when he brings Hisano Kuroda to the hospital. Finding him attractive, she flirts with him, only to be quickly rejected as he rushes off to a part-time job.

When Yu next attempts to visit Hisano, he runs into an off-duty Sayoko, who coerces him into accompanying her on a date. While sitting at a counter together, she drinks and complains about her life; particularly how much she hates her job and how she can't find a steady relationship. Before parting, she gives Yu her cell phone number and asks him to call her if he wants to go out again.

During the festival, Yu comes to the aid of Eri Minami when she takes a sharp blow to the head while defending her step-son. Frantic, he calls Sayoko, who answers the call expecting him to ask her out to the festival when she's caught off guard by his sudden need for medical advice. Becoming serious, she calmly instructs Yu on how to treat Eri's injury, and later arrives to find that things are well under control. Seeing the results of Yu's efforts, she remembers why she had chosen to become a nurse and finds a new resolve in performing her duties.

As in the video game, Yu's interactions with Sayoko grant him the power of the Devil Arcana Social Link.

Other Media

In the Persona 4 PS2 game, Sayoko Uehara is one of the numerous characters that are part of the Social Link aspect of the game but can only be contacted as part of the part time job in the hospital. She is voiced in the Japanese version by Natsuko Kuwatani, and the English version is performed by Wendee Lee. As part of her quest, Sayoko comes on strongly to the persona, but becomes steadily more stern with the other workers. She considers quitting her job a a nurse, but through talking with the player she decides to leave Inaba and join a volunteer medical group that travels to poor nations. Once completed, the option to create Beelzebub of the Devil Arcana becomes available.
